Show SETHNG HIMSELF EIGHT The Version Given Ty Mr Jones > of a Little Money Affair f DENVER Coo February 20th 1885 To the Editor ofTiiE HERALD V Dear Sir My attention was called to an article in your paper of January 10th 1885 under the title of Hoist by i his own Petard which does me a great in justice and I would ask you in all fairness fair-ness to publish my version of the case The facts reported in your paper arc ieiry all incorrect and that part relating to my getting lliley drunk and stealing his money is false The facts are these Myself and another operator had V concluded to go to San Francisco V at that time I was working at Bridgeport where John Riley was employed as section foreman lie wanted to accompany us which we agreed to We left Bridgeport Bridge-port on December 31st ISSiJand arrived it Grand unction that evening V > Here Riley received all the money due him from the railroad company and had in all about 22 J Riley is a man who is fond of liquor and when he has money gets on sprees and that qvening he drank heavily The next day being New Years he drank freely We had arranged to leave Grand Junction on he 2 ocfock train On the morning of the 2d about noon BuOy left me and went out nitlt st party of men I did tlts i t 3 not see him all the afternoon and waited at the Rio Grande hotel until nidnight for him I then started out to find him I looked for him in the saloons and vis informed by a saloonkeeper saloon-keeper that he was at a place kept by Cheyenne Emma and lie advised me to get him away or get his money from him as he was liable to get rid of it I went to the place and hearing voices I listened and recognized llileys voice At that time the mistress of the house came out with a pitcher going for beer accompanied byn man I then V Kent into the house saw Riley who was incapable of taking care of himself I took what money he had on his person and his watch V then went to the hotel and went to bed Did not see Riley again until the next day about noon when he came to me and said he had i been robbed and could not go to California Cali-fornia I then told him i had his money Mr Shekel was present when I handed him the munev and he was overjoyed at finding I had it I 1 told him the circumstances He handed the money back for me to keep for him and told him would take it with the understanding that he was to be perfectly sober and leave with iH the next morning That night he got drunk again Myself and friend left the next morning thinking it best I left Riley a letter containing sufficient money te pay his expenses to Salt Lake where we would meet him and for him to come on the nevl train I had then 150 of his money We waited for him a night and a day and he not coming wo concluded con-cluded to continue our journey thinking think-ing Riley would follow he knowing our destination or that he would write me as to what he would do and send him his money back if he did not come I had at different times before kept money for him a week at a time as much ns V 175 So when wo reached Wells Nevada the sheriff came to me on the train and showed mo n telegram from Captain Hawley instructing him to get the money from me or brim me in custody I gave the sheriff the money took his V receipt for it and continued on inv journey Have never been or heard from Riley since nordo I know where he is The above statement or the drinking and money part can be corroborated by a witness Mr Mickel and I believe Mr Riley will not deny it all V Very respectfully V V W H JOSE + |
