| Show I i 1 i THE NEW JOURNAL 1 1 The Democrat made its first appear 1 aitce last evening and put in a claim I for public recognition and support It 1 presents many evidences of having been i issued hurriedly and shows a lack of j 1 facilities but these are defects which ought to be cured in the course of a 1 day or two when the paper will doubtless I doubt-less present a much better appearance I Salt Lake has been called the graveyard if s I grave-yard of newspapers and when we look I i down thelong tat of journals j that have I j first seen the light of day and found j HI I J early tombs in this city from the 1101111 1 i I t 1 1 tainecr of nearly thirty years ago to the 4 Referee of last month the conviction I l comes that there is a good deal of grim truth in the remark However i I l the people of Salt Lake have I d I ever been kind to meritorious I f j I newspapers They have never permitted I i T rl a journal to expire that should have t I i I f lived indeed the public has been sot so-t generous in this matter that it has kept t t l sheets in existence that were dead and t I I It l J should have been buried long before W they were permitted to go out of sight i ifj An ably conducted honest newspaper j l q could go before few communities no I I I larger than this one with better hope j ji and larger prospect for success than are presented right here among thickly I 1 strewn tombstones over journalistic i j 1 tojpes The Democrat comes at a J time when business is greatly depressed t i i and the financial affairs of the city and I i Territory ere in anything but a healthy t f < prosperous condition however there is t nothing in the disheartening state of trade that need discourage an enterprising 1 4 j enter-prising newspaper if the people 1 want the paper if the journal gives them the news and merits I theirconfidence and respect they will t t I find money to pay for it and success S will be assured from the start The I I I question of whether there is room for need not arise there is always room i for a good newspaper in an American community no matter how many jour I 1 1 I nals are already published in the community com-munity THE HERALD is sincere in extending I ex-tending a hearty welcome to the Democrat Demo-crat We have nothing hut good wishes for the new paper and think we are well enough acquainted with the people 1 to promise that the latest comer in the I journalistic field will meet WIthall the I 1 l I encouragement that its merits as a L 1 newspaper and a laborer for the good I of the city and Territory deserve Success I Suc-cess and long life orfailure and an early t grave are matters that rest with the l 1 I newspaper itself andnotwith the public |
