| Show A YEAR IN THE PEN Keilly Implicated in the Trunk Robbery So Sentenced The court room was crowded yesterday yester-day afternoon with a throng of eager spectators who came out to listen to the proceedings in the case of John Keilly charged with having a hand in the recent trunk robbery in the St James hotel Keilly limped into court accompanied by Mr Critchlow his lawyer he is the man who was so badly injured out at the Pen by a crazy pnsoner who beat him with a shovel The jury drawn to trv the case were as follows John McLaws J D Van Tassel Thos E Jeremy Jun A J Pendleton Jun Thos McLelland Jun Edward Rotch Edward Bird John Mc Keller J E Paine Robt H Wheeler George T Felt and G D Shell The chief interest centered in the testimony of the other thief concerned in the act Nosey Banks who tried to exculpate Keilly by saying he had been assisted in the robbery by one Mullens who left the city soon after one Dick who had been arrested with the others but discharged toid a confused sort of story the aim of which was also to clear Keilly The story of the secondhand second-hand man who identified Keilly as the person who offered the stolen goods for sale was also introduced and the jury had the puzzling task ol deciding between be-tween the two stories Mr Snow and Mr Critchlow having made the addresses Judge Zane delivered de-livered the charge and the jury retired to their room as they did not reappear ra half an hour an adjournment was taken until 730 At about 830 the jury entered the court room and rendered a verdict of guilty but strongly recommendel prisoner to the mercy of the Court Keilly waived the statutory time for sentence when Judge Zane sentenced I him to one year in the penitentiary |
