Show JUSTICE A Few Pertinent Queries Concerning Concern-ing the Liquor Traffic SALT LAKE CITY Feb 01883 To the Editor of TUB HERALD In the interest of morality and common com-mon justice will you permit me to ask a question in your columns so that it may reach the widest rango of people and receive from them and you an answer swer The City Council as authorized bylaw by-law imposes a uniform rate of license on the liquor interest of this city they also place each and every dealer in spirituous vinous or fermented liquors ender a heavy penalty for the preserva tion of good order and decent conduct in their respective houses The question ques-tion then is Should not all be treated alike as relates not only to the obliga tions entered into but as to the penalties imposed for noncompliance Then why is such a notorious dive as that mentioned in THE HERALD Sunday on econdSouth streetallowed to flourish in the face of decency and law while other places which are by the operation of law placed on an equal footing with such dens are requireoto be decent and orderly I believe in license in conDucting con-Ducting the liquor traffic in an orderly ray and in all wholesome measures tending to the public welfare but if that place can carry on a brothel and a sink of iniquity night after night by reason of the same obligations which respectable respect-able houses give the question naturally irises Where is the equity resulting from such construction and enforcement of law Are not the lawmakers in duty bound to make all subject to the conditions imposed upon one and one bound by those placed upon all Not that I desire the same latitude given to other liquor dealers that that place has taken by any means but that I do do sire that such places be subjected to the penalties imposed by law for infringement infringe-ment in order that respectaBle dealers may not be placed in a false position by having their names and occupations oc-cupations associated with those who coaucl such enterprises as that named while themselves endeavoring and ac oqmplishing the purpose of keeping law withm the law and paying as much with a little protection as the objectionable concern referred to receives The bond given by the dealers in liquors in this city has but one object in view and that is the maintenance of law and order of what possible value can such an obligation be to the community com-munity when a portion of those who jive itlt are at iontg make night lideous without molestation while other and respectable places arenot so conducting themselves as to even need watching Thats what I want to knew JUSTICE |
