Show y JThe Snowstorm r CHICAGO February 9 A snowstorm of great violence is aging throughout a number of eastern and nearly all western States east of the Rocky Mountains Moun-tains In this citYbusiness of all kinds is nearly suspended Snow lies to a great depth in thp i streets The streetcars street-cars drawn by horses are moving only with great difficulty and freight yards in railway stationsfreight handlers and I train employees are engaged in an attempt o at-tempt to cleart the tracks Passenger trains only are attempting to leave At the signal station news was rather conflicting con-flicting and confused This much was I authorized however The snowstorm has come from the south It arose in the Gulf of Mexico yesterdayand has been traveling a little east of north since The wind was blowing with a velocity ve-locity of twenty miles per hour It has gone far to thenorthwest the weatherbeing especially fierce in all the lower lake regions from here to Buffalo It has taken Its flight to the St Lawrence Law-rence region in a northeasterly direction direc-tion This morning the storm had not reached the northern end of Lake Michigan neither will it reach as far northwest Dnlutb but take in Wisconsin Wis-consin While snowing here and all along the lake region the storm has produced rain in the Ohio Valley this being largaa storm said the signal officer as to include all kinds of weatherin its wake While snowing fiercely in Buffalo for instance it is raining in Pittsburg but 200 miles south The rain extends as far south as northern Mississippi The actual measurement qf the snowfall has not be possible by reason of the excessive drifting but at least six inches Ml between the beginning of the storm last night and at G this morning Although the temperature early this morning was fiVe degrees higher by the thermometer than yesterday morning it is rapidly growing colder in the northwest region especially in Manitoba and Dakota and Northern Minnesota The frigid wave is reading read-ing At Fort Gary last night the mercury had reached 51 degrees below zero and at St YmcentSS degrees below This excessively cold wave is moving eastward east-ward and may be upon us tonight In this city at noon the mercury stood I i 20 degrees above zero i CHICAGO February 9The storm I i which commenced on Sunday morning j I extends throughout Illinois Iowa i 10 Nebraska Michigan Indiana Minnesota I Minne-sota and Wisconsin In some respects I j I it is most remarkable The thermometer i i thermome-ter was below zero in certain points in I this State while at the same time OPth miles distant it is raining with severe thunder storms The fall of snow varies from fourteen inches to three feet on the level All the railroads rail-roads are more or less blockaded and I in many sections all freight and passenger pas-senger trains abandoned Tonight the I fall of snow discontinued and the thermometer 0 ther-mometer marks from zero to 13 degrees I below 1I I 1 I I |
