Show The AntiChinese Congress PORTLAND Or February 120ne of the leaders ot the antiChinese movement move-ment stated to an Associated Press correspondent cor-respondent tonight that the congress called to meet here tomorrow would pas a resolution to call on all persons employing Chinese to discharge them If at the end of thirty days any Chinese should be employed the antiChinese associations will boycott such employers employ-ers and also all persons patronizing such employers These resolutions have been prepared so the Associated Press reporters informant said and he had no doubt that they will pass with possibly an amendment or two He further stated that he believed that no attempt would be made to drive the Chinese from their abodes as threatened threat-ened by Burnett G Haskell and that the congress would quietly disperse The sheriff today swore in SCO special deputies each armed with a six shooter It is well known that a large number of Chinese have recently bought revolvers and rifles and wiT defend their lives and property The principal fear now is that some drunken mid irresponsible crowd small perhaps per-haps may attack a Chinese house whose occupants are armed in which case it is not unlikely that some of the attacking party will be killed If this occurs a big riot will be almost inevitable inevit-able This evening a meeting of members of the Grand Army of the Republic was held and the services of seventyfive Veterans were tendered to the mayor for the preservation of peace in case of trouble in the next few days The company does not serve as a post of the Grand Army of the Republic but simply as a home guard At 9 oclock tomgnt Mayor Gates bought Winchester Win-chester rifles and a supply of ammunition ammuni-tion for this company who will report to the commander of the State militia whenever necessary and move under his orders Within the past forty eight hours there has been a wonderful crystalization of sentiment in favor of suppressing at the outset any unlawful acts |
