Show I Dcraeut the Denier i Mr Dement Surveyor General of Utah appeared before the Senate Pub lic Lands Committee today for the purpose pur-pose of denying in toto all of the stories credited to him of enormous frauds recently discovered in Utah implicating numerous Senators and members Dement especially dwells upon the fact that these publications have been ingeniously in-geniously devised for the purpose of making him ridiculous He is not yet confirmed and may have been influenced by that fact He made a needless aunt ber ot misrepresentations before the committee today and having taken the position of eating up the words of the frightful stones of corruption given ont by him it is now a mild subject for wonder what could have developed such a mendacious mania in the loosejawed Dement A reporter of the World called upon Dement last Saturday evening and to this repprterDement talked freely only stipulating that what he said should not he given as comng from him He dic tated a part of his charges and the original notes of what he then gave and now denies will be laid before the Pub tic Lands Committee in answer to De mentsdenial today The World reporter re-porter in writing out his report of the I conversation carefully followed the stipulation of not quoting except ex-cept in the paragraph authorized Through au error in the transmission of a late despatch tho whole story was put inside of quotation marks For this error of transmission i Dement received re-ceived an explanation and if he had not seen fit to deny all that he said then his confidence would have been kept But his denials since have made it ap pear that the whole story was manu factured by a World reporter who had no knowledge or interest in Utah mat tersNew York World 1 |
