Show THE ABDICATION OF AXEXA > DEK In our dispatches 4his morning will be found a complete account of the abdication ab-dication of PrinceAlexandcrVof Bulgaria Bulga-ria The principality of Bulgaria is sit uaed south of the Danube river and north of the Balkan mountains covering cov-ering an area of 2i360 English square miles and containing population of about 2000000 The territory out of which this principality was formed originally ori-ginally belonged to Turkey but at the close of the TurkoBnssian Bart which ended in disaster for Turkey theSultan by the terms of the treaty of St Stefano consented to give up sovereign control of the territory out of which Eastern Ronmania and BulgariarWere subs quentlyorganized by the Berlin conference confer-ence in 1878 Article one of the Treaty of Berlin says Bulgaria shall be constituted con-stituted an autonomous tributary principaiAy under the suzerainty of His Imperial Majesty the Sultan of Turkey but shall have a Christian government and a national militia Article three of the same treaty says The Prince of Bulgaria shall be freely elected by the population and confirmed con-firmed by the sublime Porte with the consent of the Powers No member of any of the reigning houses of the great European Powers can be elected Prince of Bulgaria In case of a vacancy in the princely dignity the election of the new prince shall take olace under the same conditions anil with the same forms Under these regulations the abdicating prince known in Bulgarian history ha Alexander the I was elected undervery auspicious circumstances in April 1S79 and the June following assumed the government ° He is a son pfPrince Alexander of Hesse and brother of the impress of Russia He is a young man not yet having seen thirty summers He has served both in the German and Russian armies and the skill and courage he exhibited in snatching victory from the very jaws of defeat in April last when at war with Sarvia gave evidence that he was possessed of military ability of ono mean order In teed even now his people acknowledge his ability as la military leader And in the governments govern-ments proclamation of his abdication it is said He rendered great services on the field of battle but politically he had too little regard forBuIgarias position asa slave state and the maintenance of relations with Russia This lifts the corner of the curtain of till question and givesus glance at the causes that brought about the abdication abdi-cation of Prince Alexander Of the two millions of population of Bulgaria 70 per cent arc Christians members of the Greek Patriotic Church 2370per cent are Mahometans and 072 percent per-cent are Jews Bulgaria therefore there-fore is a Christian s State and has never relished the idei of being put under the watchcare of a llahommedsn monarch the Sultan Turkey The peOple of Bulgaria being Christians and belonging to the same branch of the Christian church as the people ofllus sia thV Greek Catholic e1 have everfelt like revolting from the imperial im-perial control of the Sultan and seeking seek-ing protection under the powerful pol itfcalwing of Russia Prince Alexander Alexan-der was not favorable to Russian ideas I and hit election gave much dissatisfaction dissatisfac-tion io3lussia at tbe Hme it occurred The prince and his people then were nollnharmony on thBf great issue and II at demand of the people the prince descended the throne The chief interest in this matter does not centre in Bulgaria itself but arises from thefact tat tae state w a created by the limited voices oJthegresfc Powers Pow-ers of Europe who have a voles in I confirming the princes that shall be I elected to reign which together with the wellknown ambition of Russia to control absolutely in the affairs of Bulgaria Bul-garia and the willingness of the people of Bulgaria to allow her to do so may i lead to serious European complications |
