Show AN EMEUTE Five Prisoners Escape From the Penitentiary BUT THEY ARE RECAPTURED The Guard Disarmed and the Deiper ate ltunnwsj bteal a Buggy to Drive cilia The most desperate attempt at escape that has been made trom the Penitentiary Peniten-tiary was that which occurred atthat InstItution in-stitution yesterday morning and gives tbe principal actors five of the convicts incarcerated there the palm for daring and their bubsequent retaking by the deputies the highest praise for efficiency effi-ciency The desperadoes were John Watrin Ernest Williamson John Cleveland George Davis an < John A Flowers They were engaged in grubbing sagebrush sage-brush in the field close by when their attempt to escape previously planned was put into execution It was to overpower the guard who had been warned before starting out to keep his distance He unwittingly appears allowed the convicts to reep on to him and in an unguarded moment mo-ment he was seized and his pistol and gun taken from him Possessed of these defensive weapons the prisoners made for the hills In their flight and a short distance from the Pen they stopped an old lady who was driving down the road ina twonorsi rig politely oskoa herto step down nud out which she did as nimbly as her age would admit of and the pang climbed in driving off and leaving the owner to make her way as best she might The vehicle was not driven far having been abandoned a short distance up the road when the prisoners took to tho brush The alarm was 1In mcdiatel given and Warden Dow and his uards were soon on the trail of the fugitives Marshal Dyer was promptly telephoned for aid and be with a Josse of deputies was not long in giving chase umong the force being Ureenman Vandercook Smith and Pranks The path taken by the culprits was noted by the guards and tbo deputies well armed in 1 resolute were on their tracks with a vengeance Three of the runaways were observed to enter a clump of brush it was stated and several sev-eral rounds of ammunition were fired in the direction with the intention of bringing them out The rasult of the shooting there was the wounding of Watrin through the leg and the grazing of the vmst of one of the Jrll The three Here captured were Watrio Williamson I and Flowers The hrat named is serving a four year sentence for grand larceny Williamson is the young none thief who was sentenced a few weeks ago on three charges for a year on each Dais wasln for three ycars for bo este8iiD Cleveland was also in for grand larceny in the robbing of C P caw at Ogden and Flowers was serving out a term for an assault with s deadly weapon They are all desperate men wno took i desperate chance when thev made I their break for liberty but tbe sequel shows that they were outdone in the matter of bravery hy their pursuers and captors The other two Davis and Cleveland it was feared toward nightfall had eluded their followers and got clear but it was learned late in the evening that they too had been overtaken and recaptured and taken back to their cells within the Penitentiary walls The promptitude with which action was taken in this matter is deserving of great praise on the part of the Warden the Maisbal and their aides The following fol-lowing up and retaking of five of the most desperate men imprisoned in the Pen when they had so much th tart of their pursuers is e feat which reflects credit upon the force and will no donbt impress others contemplating escape that the Marshal and his men will not do to fool w < tb |
