those in this country who have spent a winter in Canada the rare sport of tobogganing as now enjoyed in nearly every town or city of any importance within the Dominion is doubtless familiar but In the United States and particularly in Chicago the sport is only ot very recent date The first elide erected in this country was erected at Saratoga winter before last and at the carnival of the it Paul Ice Palace last year the fits toboggan slides ever seen in the wes were constructed Now however the sport is popular throughout all ot the Sew England States and in the cities 01 Boston Providence New York amid throughout tie States of New Jersey New York and Pennsylvania Timlin slide erected in Chicago was put up by he Kenwood Toboggan Club oil the Lake shore near the foot of Forty seventh street and the frolics of the club members on their slide attracted much attention last winter The toboggan itself may pehaps best be < < described by being termed a sled without with-out runners being simply strip of basswood bass-wood or hickory two feet wide am from three and a half to say sir meet long one end being steemed and curled like the dashboard of a sleigh The upper side If the conveyance is strongly created and on top C these are lashed the side rails to wl1 ch the rider clings al he is whirled through the air at more ban railroad speed Until lute veers natural declivities such as may be found in any hilly country were used bv tobogganists but the artificial slide were found far superior in that they were perfectly free from jolting placed or caliutf as the Canadians call them and at the terrific rate of speed at aintt by the toboggan such jolts or depressions sions are exceedingly disagreeable if not dangerous for the ellectis to throw the OROgganist high into the air letting him get back as best he may Although the starling point upon a toboggan slide i a from forty to fifty feet from the ground the chutes in which the toboggans tobog-gans slide are so constructed as to render accident practically impossible The toboggan starts from a platform at the top of the slide and runs in a chute two or three feet wider than the toboggan tobog-gan itself The chute is protected on each side < < by flooring boards so that the riders cannot set out of the chute laterally The chne and indeed the entire track for a distance of several hundred yards is carefully grade and solidly filled with snow over which water is poured until it becomes one long icy roadway from start to finish everal tracks of course may run parallel to each other upon the same structure From two to four persons generally form the load of a toboggan and when so loaded the speed attained b marvelous A loaded toboggan upon an ordinary slide rarely moves at a less rate of speed than one mile per minute and the manufacturer ot a celebrated make of this style of conveyance in Vermont openly advertises tat upon it a speed of three miles a minute maybe obtained with perfect safety TilE COSTUMES Not the least of the attractions Of tobogganing lies in the picturesque beauty of the costumes worn They are invariably made from soft wool blankets usually scarlet or bright blue The head is protected by a hood or togue of some brilliant hue and a sash of the I Fame color bound about the wearers waist confines the garments as the i rider flies over the icy stretch Upon the feet moccasins are won instead of shoes mid when large party of tobog ganists thus appareled are climbing up or flying down the slide by the glare of I torches or the brilliant rays of the electric light the scene is not one to br soon forgotten The toboggan is steered I by the trailing foot of the man upon the rear end and when the conveyance has come to B standstill at the end of the slide he takes the toboggan under his arm and the party reascends to the top of the slide along the footpath built atone at-one side of the chute The sport is exhilarating ex-hilarating and heajthfol and accidents very rarely if ever occur A G Spalding ifc Eros of Chicago have noW in press a very interesting I book on tobogganing which gives much valuable and entertaining information I concerning this and ether Canadian winter sports It will be issued November Novem-ber 15th ASOTHEB SPORT Another sport which promises to be popular in Chicago this season is that of snowshoeing It requires no little pracice to become an expert tramp with the tennis bats but once the kua k of it is attained one can move along over the deepest and most trench erous drifts with perfect confidence in their ability to stay upon the upper crut In Canada there are innumera snowshoe club and the members take their moonlight or torchlight tramps in their ciub uniforms NYU |
