Show S THE COWAN CASE C > t J MrTeasleJs t Clerk Falls a t S Prey MCKAY APPEARS AS BOO ifBAli After Delving Into a Little Family History the J Commissioner Continue S Con-tinue the tteailnI William Cowan a clerk in 8 P Teas dels storewas arrested yesterday afternoon after-noon on the charge of unlawfully cohabiting co-habiting with his wT3f Mary Cowan and Jane StonerCowan He was taken before Commissioner McKaywhen that officer assumed the role of a judicial PoohBah tb3 prosecutor being absent and the Comnnaioner performing the triple functions of attorney for the prosecution pro-secution attorney for the defense and judge of the evideice iMBS JANE S C WAX the second wife testified very frankly that she irrieddefendant i irch 30th 1837 resided at 547 S Eait Temple she and Mdry lived in separate houses defendant defend-ant lived in her house for seven and a half years the unity lived in entire peace as one familv it was understood that Mr Cowan wasto live with her tne family had made tho1 arrangement Mr Cowan supported Mary as his wife did not know any specific reason for the arrangement it was not nude with witness wit-ness but between defendant and Mary Mary was an invalid and witness cared fcr her when her daughter was absent knew defendant was married to Mary the wives owned the property the defendant was a clerk in Teasdels store Mas JANE COWAN stated that she was the defendants daughterinlaw her husbands name was John the defendant defend-ant lived in his house on East Temple street had seen the defendant in Marys houe hai en him eat in both houses never saw him sleep in either house had been there but seldom the I last time witness was there was last 3ecember when Mrs Cowan had met TT th an accident and the elders were called in to administer to her had seen defendant call in there a number of times during the last three years but in that time had not seen him eating he ate in Jane Cowans JOSEPH COWAN testified he was a son of Jane SonerCowan knew Mary Cowan she was defendants wife last saw her in August defendant lived in Janes house had lived there as long as witness could remembersix years had lived there all the time witness had seen his father at Marys in the daytime i never knew of his remaining re-maining there over night had not been there for a long time defendant never stayed there atter9 pm but called two or three times a day Mary he thought was about 70 and her health was very poor the defendant had not lived with Mary for about six years but supported sup-ported and treated her as his wite except ex-cept that he did not live thereIn there-In answer to the Commissioners question Mrs Jane Cowan said both women were treated the same except the defendant did not live with Mary Mr Cowan himself stated that he would visit Mary when he went home from work to his meals but lived with Jane he answered readily that he held Mary out as his wife the arrangement between them was perfectly satisfactory to all he had been a clerk at Teasdels for 13 years last April had a family of eighty to support his only income was his salary The Commissioner announced that as the witnesses had been subpoonaed to appear before the Grand Jury this morning he would continue the matter over till Wednesday at 10 am in order to see what dispositidn they made of it Mr Cowan was released upon his own recognizance to appear at that time p |
