Show THE RESULT OF ABSb1 UTE VETO POWER There is one division y oL Governor Wests report to the Secretary the Interior that will be we should judge exceedingly interesting reading to er Governor Murray and his associates and advisers in his veto infamy The di ision referred to is the one dealing with the Territorial appropriations Under that heading the Governor informs in-forms us that the debt of the Insane Asylum on hoard andtreatment account ac-count is 848989 running at the rate of 10 per cent interest per annum That the indebtedness of the Deseret Univer sHy alSo bearing interest at 10 percent is 3009726 That up December 1st 1885 there was due to jurors and witnesses wit-nesses for mileage and attendance in the district courts the sum of 22000 and from that date up to September 1st 1886 the indebtedness of the Territory for like services in the three districts amounts io 35a ° makingarronn indebtedness to people who have served as jurors and witnesses of 578G303 aggregating an indebtedness 103450 i44587 of which drawing interest at 10 per cent per annum Governor West estimates that on or before the 31st of December next there will be paid into in-to the Treasury of Territorial taxes 97125 which added to the 57 517 which has been lying idle in the treasury will make a total in the treasury treas-ury of 151442 And this unhappy arid discreditable state of affairs was imposed im-posed upon the Territory by the acts of a petty despot clothed with a little brief authority but wha thought public sentiment was embittered against the Mormons that he could abuse the use of his veto power with impunity and that however much the present administration admin-istration might feel disposed to rebuke his insolence it would not dare to do it because of the force of that same public sentiment But he and his advisers miscalculated the strength of character in the present administration ad-ministration Eli Murray was gracefully fully kicked out for his veto deviltry though Congress failed in its duty towards to-wards the Territory by not providing foran extra lession of the Territorial legislature to repair the mischief done by autocrat Murray and his veto exploits ex-ploits The present financial condition of the educational and humane institutions of Utah is a protest against that system of government which does not allow the people to have absolute control of its local financial affairs |
