Show Those Jznuggled Goods WASHINGTON October 21Speaking today of the alleged importation of wine etc by the officers of the United States ships Saratoga and Portsmouth Commodore Schley Chief of the Equipment Equip-ment Bureau said that there was no attempted smuggling on board the training Ship The officers did brirg over a considerable quantity of wine with them from Madeira intended for friends on this side who had sent for it with the txpress understanding that the duty whatever it be should be paid If the commanding officers had been given an opportunity Commodore Schley said he would have sent to the customs authorities and asked for an inspector to come aboard to make an appraisement of such goods as might be dutiable But the officers were treated as smugglers caught in the act almost before the vessel had anchored and did not have an opportunity to show their intentions NEWPORT R I October 21The matter of smuggling on the tra nmg ships Saratoga and Portsmouth was settled set-tled this afternoon by a deputy collector boarding the vessels and collecting from the officers the duty on the contraband goods by inspectors who had been onboard on-board the vessels ever since their arrival ar-rival and possession of which they had severally made depositions The collection col-lection amounted to nearly 600 The money was notpaid without a protest but it was paid as the ships leave here tomorrow The protests will be referred re-ferred to the Secretary of the Treasury |
