Show i THE YOUNG BEUSl SOn S-On Tuesday next June 1st the Young tamily descendants of John Young and their relatives will assemble assem-ble and bold a memorial reunion The 1 day willbe tb nniversary of the birth of the most tjtinKuisbed member oC 1 the family tbj late Brigham Young 1 having come into this world eighty five years ago The people of Utah 1 generally could appropriately and might consistently join in a celebration t j of the birthday anniversary of Brigham 1 Young and we believe thotime will 7 come when June 1st will be observed i throughout the Territory in more or less of a public manner Comparatively few people in this world agreed with I Brigham Young in his peculiar I ideas regarding religion and m rriage i but it is not too much to say that the world recognized him as a great man l anda conspIcuoUS figure in the social t I political and industrial affairs of the century There have been very few men in any century Who stood forth in such bold relief as he the position which he occupied commanding the attention 1 i at-tention and arousing the thought and t discussion of the prominent and wise I men of nations i J But it is not what mankind thought I of Brigham Young which should or does excite the admiration tbe respect the almost reverence of the people of Utah We now refer to the people of i Utah not as Mormons or Gentiles as Hebrews or Christians but as the inhabitants in-habitants of this political division of the republic It is true that as the jrejigioua head of the Mormon Church he was best known to the world and in f that capacity will his name be carried i down through the generations but in t matters outside of religion in the i 1 practical rather than in the spiritual field will impartial history make him remarkable and great Ho was i essentially l a pioneer a leader of men an organizer and a ruler The Mormons of course claim that it J was divine inspiration which enabled j him to1 lead the way into this the wilderness l wil-derness to found here and foster a I i vast progressive and powerful com < munity the nonMormons will attribute attri-bute Jt to the force of character of a bigbrained man who was designed by jutare just such an undertaking aswan as-wan presented to him at the opportune moment Whatever it was that impelled im-pelled him whether it was the divine V 1 iaflaenoe operating through him or the activity of an intelligent farseeing far-seeing mind he was certainly 1 i the fonder of Utah in the material cense and as suchall can afford to give him the credit and praise which are due to pioneers an < l the founders organizers and successful rulers of commonwealth < common-wealth The spirit which has incited the tailing together of the family of the dead in memorial reunion is commendable commend-able and the gathering should become a flied e tomialthatfamUy But the interest in Brigham Young went far beyond his own immediate relatives reachng out to all the 1 people of Utah and beyond to those of the adjoining States and Territories all 1 ofjwbkh were more or less colonized trmegb his influence at d by his direct efforts and protection All who < are l living in Utah today owe something J to a Sngbam Young for Jet individuals ani the world say what they will of him and the religious system with which he J WAS associated he planted and did mach to hold together and rear to r rettaeas the community which makes I Utah admired strong and prosperous 1 f a ka1epro sive and vigorous com JMBvealth The sphit of heroworship IB not very largely developed in the 1 tardy people of this Territory and we I I are glad that it is so jet we hope the 4 time Ja act distant when toe recon > 1 lion eiBrfgbam Youngs birthday will i net confined to feUo wn family |
