CUICAOO May 20th 1830 From our Special Correspondent Surprises have seemed the order of things in this years race for the National Na-tional League pennant and not the least of these has been the remarkable rush to the front by the Detroit team which now leads the remaining clubs and that with several games to spare That Detroit was strong at the bat was generally conceded before tho season commenced but that the team would thus early in the race develop such uniform and effective work In the fied was anticipated in no quarter save perhaps In Detroit itself and the predictions pre-dictions of Detroiters were looked upon more in the light of a pardonable enthusiasm en-thusiasm than as possessing any likelihood likeli-hood of ever bein r Tulfilled To one who had never seen the League teams upon the field a first sight of the Detroit De-troit lads would prove a pleasing one New York must certainly relinquish their title tothe Giants this season in favor of Detroit for liner looking lot of fellows never crossed the diamond than these same Detroiters Two of the team Dan Bronthers and Big Thompson are six feet two inches tall and weigh over 210 pounds Bennett Baldwin Richardson White Rowe and I Hanlon are all longlimbed powerful fellows and the team taken as a whole is without question as formidable a looking body of men as there is enraged enrag-ed in professional base ball today When themen played in Chicago they created an impression among Chicagoans Chicago-ans in every way favorable and when they left hero for Detroit to meet the New Yorkers many hearty wishes for their success against the giants went with them We did not dream of such a thing as their taking three straights from the Giants and now with Detroit De-troit three games ahead of us in the race we are not so much in favor of their winning any more games this week at least It is too early in the season for our comfort here to see Detroit De-troit WALKING TO THE FBOXT in such businesslike style for yon know if the pennant is coming west again tis year Chicago is just enough of a porkpacking centre to want that rag At New York we out here are surprised though there really seems to be no marked let down in the play of the Giants New York played good ball but Detroit played better and that perhaps is all that need be said of those games To one familiar with the strength of the respective teamsit does not eeem probable that the Gothamites will long remain under their present cloud The ability of the team seems too great for that Welch and Kecfe both seem to have retained their speed I and cleverness in the box and with the exception of Philadelphia which club proved the beta noir ot the Giants last season New York had made her usual showing until she met Detroit That she will yet head Detroit in the race seems a very reasonable thing to pro diet and that Detroit may yet meet a Wellington in some one of the clubs she has still to face would seem ground upon which to speculate As for Chicago Chi-cago our lads are playing their old time steady game with our old batteries bat-teries as effective as of yore and our uew one all and more than we could have expected Young Ryan is proving a valuable find for the club and is proving himself a born ball player and prettier fielding work was never seen in centre upon the home grounds and at the bat he is as strong he is fearless and successful between bases Kelly is the same Kelly that has caused spectators I specta-tors to laugh and applaud at his base running tncks for so many years past and Gore Anson and Dalrymple are playing even better than last year Flint is catching with his old time effectiveness ef-fectiveness but is weak at the bat and slow between bases Williamson is playing at short stop this year and Burns at third Some costly errors upon the partof both have resulted from tbe change but these have been fewer than was expected considering tho number of seasons that Burns had covered short and Williamson third and had played no other positions Our grounds still remain the finest in the country and the public is supporting support-ing the GAME IS CHICAGO as generously if not more so this year than last It must gall New York bit to see slow going old St Louis step over hr head into third place but that is just what she has done and the Giants with the close of the week just past held fourth place above Philadelphia by just one more game won St Louis might play better ball than she is now playing but for the personal illfeeling that still exists among certain members of the club despite Manager Schmelt s earnest efforts to exterminate all such and retain his team Such a state of things is very much to be deplored and it would seem a managers duty to drop tho disturbing element in his team no matter how valuable the men as players play-ers Following these clubs is Philadelphia Philadel-phia in fifth place Washington in sixth place Boston in seventh and Kansas City in eight Altogether the race assumed as-sumed a character the more interesting interest-ing because of its wholly unexpected coloring What this week may bring it is indeed difficult to predict but it is pretty safe to say that it will dOle with Detroit still in the lead and Chicago not far from second place The race for the AMERICA ASSOCIATION pennant still continues with the St Louis Browns in the lead and playing great ball Following is tbe standing of lierdubs to date r J J Won Los St LouIs is 8 Pt wWsgax O ° fleo1l > lonUrtlte 10 LJ dnfilumilr 10 18 If Athletic 9 S Iii
