Show STOCK IN THE SOUTH A Chat With thr Owner of Greasewood Farm HIS SUCCESS WITH HOLSTEDiS Sir McLellaa Kxperleace The De crease In CropiA Good Showing Importance ofGood Stock THE HEBALD of yesterday announced the arrival in this city of Mr A J Stewart of Greasewood Farm and Messrs Albert Stevens and H j Mc Lellan of Piate County Utah Meeting the gentlemen at their quarters at the Spencer House last evening HERALD reporter proceeded to extract some information in-formation in regard to the Southern countryand with the following successful success-ful result Mr Stewart was the firat one approached and in answer to numerous queries he said All my horses are now out in the paature but four or five will be brought in for training about the 10th of July These will be23 and 5 year olds none of them have as yet had any training train-ing but we arc prepared to enter them in the fall meeting to trot against any Utahbred horses of the same age at from 25 to 100 entrance 1 shall be pleased to see a race made for Utah bred animals and wilt do all in my power to mace it successful exhibition My object for sometime past has been to get up a series of meetings of Utah bred stock in the several counties preparatory pre-paratory to the holding of Territorial airs If this could accomplished there is little doubt but that such meetings would have a tendency to develop the ate t speed that may be possessed by any Utah norses You have no uotibt then but under roper conditions and training there are any number of Utah bred horses tbut woulJ probibly show as much need at least as Rarus Jr and L O LeeYe Ye I believe that Utah is able to holt her own against any other part of heUnited States in this regard We have an excellent climate pure water and air that can I believe not be exceeded anywhere else inthb country fast experience has proven this and it only remains for the exercise of judgment judg-ment in order to show to the world just what we can do I do not mean to say however that wo can breed good animals from scrubs but that by using wellbred and wellformed animals we caRbon make a wonderful chance in the quality of the horses of this Territory Terri-tory toryAnd as to the financial outcome there can of course be no doubt None whatever a man can make more money bv raising a few good animals than by feeding a lot of horses that almost eat their heads oil during the first winter of their existence There b always a market for good stockand but very little demand for poor stock There is a growing demand for good stock and it increases as the idea fastens itself upon our farmers that it costs no more to feed good animals than poor oues There is a surplus of scrubs all over the country and the prices are sucberen when they can be soldas to preclude the possibility of driving or shipping them any distance dis-tance With the improved stock however how-ever this Is different there is always a good market and ns I said before the demand is growing constantly The tarmcrs throughout the country are beginning be-ginning to sec the facts that a few of us have been seeing for years How about GreasewooJ Well the Trotting Park is in fine condition for training and I consider it equally as good as that of the Driving Park in this city We had but very few casualties during I the past winter there were some few deaths of course but not anything to speak of All stock blocking well 1 am I pleased to say and we look for great improvement before the snow files I Mr McLellan had the following interesting in-teresting sory to tell of his success in his endeavors to improve his herds Two years ago Smith Parker went to Syracuse N Y where be purchased nine Holstein heifers and two buds of which I got four heifers and a bull and Mr Parser the remainder At the end of the first year we had ten calves and at the end of the second year nine more made their appearance Out of all of these there were but two deaths I would not now sell out for twice the sum I paid for my stock and 500 to boot to say nothing of the benefits derived fro hi grading grad-ing my other stock with toe Holsteins This I consider a pretty good showing at any rate I am more than satisfied with my investment I had groan very weary of breeding the common stock that abounds in this country and was willing to risk something some-thing on a change and the risk has turned as it must in all cases where good judgment and proper caution is used to the credit of the farmer or stockman who brings improved brands of stock into bb section of the country I remember that when I first started out there were any number of carpets and critic who demurred to paying so much saying that no ordinary farmer could afford it By this time however he said with a laugh 1030 great many nave come over to my way of thinking antI the ranks of the southern farmers who believe in progression and improvement im-provement are fast filling up Mr Stevens and I ranch together and he will corroborate all I havetold you In regard to the crops m the south or in your section Mr McLel anY They are I regret to say scarcely as heavv as in the year past There are portions of Rabbit Valley where the cut worms have played the deuce and I also hear of their ravages in other sections sec-tions There will of course be a reasonably reason-ably fair crop but not so great as the average granger would like to see < < |
