Show f MEN OF TUB rUlEs I fMr V jV r 1 Pi l r q J1 U 1 S r h M r y tpjS i K MORRISON R WAITE CniEPJosricB OP THE UNITED STATES 0 In tho quIet old rural town of Lvmo Connecticut still stands tho house whero Morrison Rcnwick Waite was born November 2y 181C Mr Wnite entered Yalo College at tho ago of seventeen sev-enteen and graduated with honors In 1837 in n class which included William M Evarts Edward Pierr pont Professor Silliman and others who have become distinguished men Ho then began tie study of law In his fathers offlco at Lym but finished his studies In the office Samuel M Young then prominent prom-inent attorney In Mauinco City Ohio In 1839 his preceptor took him Into partnership and in 1850 tho firm of yung d Waite removed to Toledo Ohio whero they began what coon proved to be a largo and successful practice A few years after Mr Waltes younger brother was admitted to tho bar and a partnership was formed consisting of Uio two brothers which continued up to tho time of tho formers appointment to his present high position by President Grant January 20th 1871 Politically Waite is a Republican but ho was always too deeply engaged in his profession to become much of a partisan or party leader To all the war measures ot the Government ho gave earnest nnd effective support In 1819 JIrWaito was elected to the Ohio Leg i laturo ca a Whig In 1E62 ho was reluctantly re-luctantly a candidate for Congress but was defeated by Edwin M Pholps V Thereafter other nominations and appointments ap-pointments were tendered him but ho refused to accept any of them Mr Waite was a conspicuous member of tho Geneva Tribunal as ono of the Unite I States counsel and ho performe his arduous task to his great credit audio aud-io the entire satisfaction of his Government Govern-ment At the conclusion of his duties In Geneva ho returned to Toledo iand resumed re-sumed jiracticc and Jn 1873 was chosen president ofthe Ohio State Constitutional Convention Upon the death pf Chief Justice Cffastf trc was itfehso Interest throughout the United States to know who would be his successor Aftertho successive nominations of George II Williams and Caleb Cushingand the withdrawn with-drawn of their names President Grant selected Mr Waite whose appointment was confirmed by tho unanimous voto otiho Senate The official career ofj ChiefJustice Waite hasfvindicatedv the wisdom of ins appointment Ho greatly respected for lila profound knowledge of law general culturoand pure and benevolent life V |
