Theimposing structur hicli now stands at the south eat corner of the Utah Central Block has imparted such anew and refreshing air to the depot of that roadrthat one hardly recognizes the locality The venerable board fence which for years surrounded the shops switches and other paraphernalia of the company and marked the limits beyond which ye differing jarring hackmen dared not intrude has been swept completely I com-pletely away and nothing nQw impedes i the approach to the newly finished passenger pas-senger depot A clean expanse of white nlatform stretches up to it on every hand and the wagons hacks and busses with their Babel of hotel declaimers now sidrt the outer edges of the platform plat-form which forms as much of a barrier to their depredatory incursions as the high fence did in days of yore The vigilant eye of Mr Calder darts into quarter and in no barracks yard every discipline of the government is a stricter cipline preserved than at the depot grounds of the UtahCentral The new passenger depot has been constructed with an eye to every convenience and requirement fits style and general proportions outside are in every way attractive and the architect whoever he is deserves commendation for the extreme tastefulness of his exterior plan Inside there are three principal I I apartments the gentlemens waiting room the ladies waiting room and the baggage room each one Ls airy and capacious the ceiling being sixteen feet in height throughout the two waiting roOms lird burnished with easy benches where people amy loll at their caSe whilewsuting for inc mingor outgoing out-going trains the ticket office connects with each waiting room Yu little windows of stained glass and here pre side Mac eo > ily sea ted between two hu coupon cases in one of these he explains are myriads of tickets to all known points in the United States where the toot of an engine has penetrated pene-trated in the cther are tickets to local oil the gentlemens towns and stations entemens waiting room is an apartment to which the venerable DaJdy Deightou who has grown gray in dishing dish-ing coffee and sandwiches and vending newspapers on the rqad hasbeen delegated his ancientlunch counter and connected by windows that slide upward f into themselves is the baggage room where the wellknown Brown i invented with authority room 20x60 nearly a whole side of which Is laid off in cheek racks clean brass checks I I hanging with ne Sstraps and glistening in endless rows everyone in its particular par-ticular alphabetic nlace and ready to be sent whirling to Maine Or Texas when its corresponding ticset is shown at the window A huge pair of Howe scales is built in the floor and a small mountain of trunks soon to be used us engines of destruction against the platform I ana baggage cars rears its I head along the north side of the room PLrMBING XD DRAINAGE I i in plumbing draining and sani j i tary respects however that the new I I passenger depot is most a model I David Sanies the well known plumber and gasfitter has been given carte I blanche in all the arrangements which I come under these departments and the result has been the introduction of many new appliances and the perfection perfec-tion of a system as n whole the like of which is not found anywhere else 1 the I city To those acquainted with the constantly improving sanitary arrangements arrange-ments in building the following features will proveof especial interest They have been thought sufficiently notable to be sent for by a noted professional journal the Sanitary cad Engineers if we remember aright which has asked that drawings be executed and forwarded for-warded at itS expense A HERALD reporter re-porter va shown through by Mr Rush workman for Mr James In the gentlemens toilet room there arc two water closets four urinals and I otic sink The water closets are of Hopper pattern and are flushed from separate tanks with a preliminary flush before and after usage In connection with these closets there is a McFarland I flush taijk which discharges five gallons gal-lons of water two and a half t each one every twentyfive minutes This flush tank Is so provided that in case the watercloset tanks should fail to work lor get out of order so that the closet would be liable K to become foul or anyllangelr arise from evaporation evapora-tion this flush tank will always keep the ticket clean and safe The traps of these closets arc easy of access either I 19 = IrpiuHhe inside or outside of the room i without tearing up the floor or remov j ing the closet as they arc all provided with cleaning screws There is no front or legs Jo the water closet the seats being all open The doors in front of I each closet reach only to within a foot I of the floor Ireo circulation qf air being thus allowed between themselves and I between the closets and the room The i four urinals are large lipped and are i flushed from one McFarland five gallon flush tank which discharges every I fortyfive minutes The partitions between be-tween are of Connecticut slate and are of course nonabsorbent They aro six feet nigh two fet six inches wide and two feet deep andare firmly set in the I cement floor The traps of these fixtures fix-tures arc in full view so as to be easy I i of access they are provided with cleaning clean-ing screws one on each air pipe so that in case the trap should happen t I hap-pen to r get stopped upj and thus j become liable to choke the air pipe it I can be opened and remoyed bY this trap screw A person can always tell I whether the air pipes are open and in a good working order the sink adjoining the urinals has slate sides andbackwith a threefourths hose built for washing There are cement floors in boththe closets and urinals thelink isof pressed steel supported by two brackets and is allx > pen anti free The trap of this fixture fix-ture is in atc view with n cleaning screw toit and also has one in the air pipe the trap of this fixture i flushed every fortyfive minutes from the same tank that flushes the urinals allowing one gallon of water to each of the five fixtures fix-tures During winter I a large gas stove will afford warmth to these apartments wilafford InthelaJiestqiletiroom there are two water closets arid one wash basin the wafe closets und basin are operated on the same principal as i the othersthe only difference being the novel way of open opn rd1ter QeJgt and slide ing and closing doors by a slde up down The traps of all these fixtures are flushed from one McFarland the watqr flush situated r over closets I The silver plated faucet over the washbasin opens three keys right or left or by pushing downward the lef is situated 500 feet from the cesspool si building and is thoroughly ventilated On the main drain there i n trap which the cuts off all communication between of and the building this trap is easy cesspool access being built in with brick with a movable cover the drain s pro wiha vided with inspection holes for the purpose pur-pose of removing stoppages a pipes that go through the foundation wall are well protected so that in case of tlfc buildings settling there i no danger Of settlg the pipes getting broken Everything in connection with the work of plumbing plumb-ing ia of the latest and most improved I style and this particular department I reflects as much to the credit of Mr James as the whole structurewhich waserected a by its own hands does to that of the Utah Central railroad f |
