Show The Remission of Taxes On Tuesday afternoon the bill providing for a further remission of the taxes of insanp idiotic or indigent indi-gent persons came up and caused a rather lengthy discussion Mr Jaques in behalf of the judiciary committee introduced the bill as a substitute for other House bills The principal provision recommended recom-mended that where there is an amount of tax due above the 5 which is allowed to be remitted by the county court that body may still further remit of the tax still due an amount not to exceed one half of the amount due over the original 85 It was objected that this would give the county court a wide discretion and that under it a person whose taxes might amount to 2wOO if he could work upon the sympathies of the court might have 81000 of that amount remitted Mr Preston moved that the remitting powers of counties be limited to 810 as if would be ample in case persons wore retlly indigent Mr Jaques and Mr Penrose argued against it and referred to the cases in the city of poor widows and Mr Attwood said if the poor city widows would sell out and move into the country they would be rich widows Mr Stout said this provision would make nearly every person indigent All commercial institutions would become be-come indigent it would pay them to so become The arguments wero favorable to the motion of MrPres ton and it prevailed The county courtsunder the action of the House will be allowed to remit only 810 of the taxes I |
