Show CITY COUNCIL 5 Proceedings in the City Council on Tuesday evening March 7th 1882 Mayor Jennings presiding A petition was presented from W J Hooper and 110 others comprising com-prising the fire brigade of the city setting forth that the duties required re-quired of them as firemen were arduous and dangerous and consumed con-sumed a great deal of their time and asking in consideration of past services rendered voluntarily and the future demands on their time and energy and the attendant risk of life and limb that the sum of 50c per hour be allowed them while in active service Referred to the committee on fire department A petition from Arthur L Thomas and thirty others residents and taxpayers of the city was submitted sub-mitted asking that suitable crossings cross-ings be made without uneces sary delay at the intersection of Second South and West Temple and Second South and First Vest streets and West Temple at the intersection in-tersection of Second South street as said crossings were largely used by all the citizens of said city in going to and from the County CourtHouse I Court-House and by the citizens of the I Second Municipal Ward in going to and from the general postotlice and the business centre of the city The petitioners represented that said crossings at the present time were in an almost impassable condition Referred to the committee on streets and alleys George Peterson and thirtytwo others petitioned for the Council to cause to be rebuilt as speedily as possible the bridge crossing Emigration Emi-gration Creek near Harris property prop-erty on the road to the Insane Asy lum Emigration and Parleys canyons can-yons Referred to the committee on streets and alleys Lucius E Hall petitioned to have First East street north of North Temple street which is laid out as an eight rod street curtailed to four rods to correspond with the width of said street from the Eagle Gate north Referred to the committee on streets and alleys Charles Lange petitioned to have his license as merchant transferred to Messrs Mueller Bros Granted A communication from the city treasurer was submitted giving a statement of the amount in the sinking fund and the manner in which it was invested showing a balance in said fund not invested of 278605 The treasurer respectfully asked how the Council desired said amount to be invested Referred S the committee on finance The committee on streets and alleys to whom was referred the petition of F Heath and others asking ask-ing that West Temple street be graveled from Eighth South to Roper street reported recommending recommend-ing that the work be done as asked for and the supervisor of streets be instructed to perform the labor as soon as practicable or in the order of business Adopted The committee on streets and alleys to whom was referred the petition of Keyser Moritz asking that the privilege be accorded them to convey through the public streets in underground pips the washings of their brewery Tenth Ward to the old Burns property reported favorably thereonand recommended that the petition be granted Adopted The committee on police o whom was referred the petition of the city police force asking an increase of salary reported that while recognizing recog-nizing the unpleasant duties attached tached to their position and the increased creased labor imposed upon them of late years they could not in view of he present financial condition of the city consistently recommend an increase but believing that the present number of policemen was not sufficient to meet the requirements of the city the committee com-mittee recommended that the present pres-ent police force be incre i = ed from seven to nine members Tne committee com-mittee set forth that this additional help would not only relieve the present policemen but also enable the marshal to give more attention to the sanitary condition of the city Adopted Alderman Dinwoodey chairman of the committee on waterworks to whom was referred the petition of Rev D S Tuttle rector of St Marks parish asking the use of water from the city mains to propel a motor etc recommended that the petition be laid over until the ordinance ordin-ance in relation to water motors now pending is acted upon by the Council Adopted The committee on elections to horn was referred the subject of ascertaining what officers are by law appointive by the City Council suggesting nominees for filling the same and making recommendations in regard to salaries etc reported the following names for the consideration I consid-eration of the Council viz Auditor John T Caine assessor of water rates John R Winder supervisor of streets Charles Livingston Liv-ingston captain of police jailor market master and inspector of fire department and superintendent of water works Geo M Ottinger pound keeper and weighmaster James Shelmerdine In regard to salaries the committee recommended that they remain at the same figures as were paid the I past year The report w received the nominations of the committee were voted upon severally and sustained sus-tained and the recommendation regarding re-garding salaries was adopted The committe on construction of the Jordon and Salt Lake City Ca i S nal reported that 459775 had been expended during the month of February Feb-ruary on the various accounts connected con-nected with said canal chiefly for lumberfor flumesand presented therewith the vouchers for each item of expense Approved and filed The Police Court report for February Feb-ruary was submitted showing that 104 caseshed been tried and eight dismissed that 8183995 had been collected on cash fines and paid into the city treasury and labor fines assessed as-sessed to the amount of 8226 tOtal to-tal of cash and labor for month 203595 Approved and filed The following bills for the month ending February 28 were presented and allowed viz Marshals expense ex-pense bills 37158 expenses of fire department 519235 gas to street lamps and city buildings 6104578 prisoners meals 1629 at 15c 824435 collecting dog tax 824 coal for City Hall 850 A bill for jurors and witnesses fees and reporters charges etc incase in-case of Levy vs Salt Lake City in Third District Court was referred to the comm1tt e on cliims The city pound keeper reported for the three months ending February Febru-ary 28 showing that fifteen animals had been impounded and 8219 received re-ceived for fees and forage Two animals were sold from which S8SO was realized and paid the city treasurer treas-urer Approved and filed The committee on construction of canal was appointed as follows Wm Jennings Mayor Jesse W Fox engineer and George Romney councilor The bill for an ordinance licensing licens-ing and regulating the manufacture sale or other disposition of spirituous spiritu-ous vinous and malt liquors was taken up on its second reading and discussed until a late hour The bill finally passed the Council and was ordered enrolled and
