Show TELEGRAPHIC The 3I rmon Cliurch Chicago 22A News stafl correspondent dent in Washington says the discussion oi the Mormon problem in connection with the contest over the seat of the delegate dele-gate from Utah is likely to bring out some unexpected facts Itis said the Mormon church for years has been silently si-lently but industriously laying ita plant to control in a measure the local governments gov-ernments of the territories in the neighborhood neigh-borhood of Utah and have in a great measure succeeded in their preliminary efforts A letter of recent date written by a resident of Idaho and now on file in the census office says the Mormons already control the elections are making strenuous efforts to retain their supremacy suprem-acy by sending colonies into all the valleys val-leys which are susceptible of cultivation and are securing full control of all the water privileges of the territory and hence with all its material intere ts tke outlook for Idaho is now but a repetition of the Utah curse Their supremacy means the subverting of all free institutions institu-tions and especially the free school system sys-tem In collecting the material for some branches of the census more especially espe-cially in regard to religion and education it was found necessary to ask the aid of Taylor successor to Brigham Young as head of the Mormon church Taylor made a show of complying with the request re-quest 01 the census officials but in fact gave no information of value The work was put in the hands of a nonMormon resident whereupon Taylor began to throw obstacles in the way of the performance per-formance of bis duties In correspondence correspond-ence with the census officials Taylor irbile trying to evade the Questions to which it was desirod he should make reply re-ply disclosed one thing in regard to his church which Brigham Young always studiously concealed and denied He had given the number of Bishops of his church and to a limited extent described their functions The census people in their reply assumed that the bishops were to the Mormon church what pastors are to other religions and proposed to send to them census returns in blank to be filled out with the statistics of their respective charges This was exactly what Taylor did not want and he therefore there-fore said that Bishops were not pastors of the church but were in fact judges of Mormon courts there being a judicial system under control of the church by which temporal cases are tried Said the Mormonreferring to the bihophe is aha assisted by two counsellors who together to-gether with himself form a court denominated de-nominated by us a II Bishops court to investigate and try all minor cases that may come before him in his ward whether of a temporal or a spiritual nature This is a pretty plain admission admis-sion of the charge of connection between the Mormon church and state and the j I practical dominance of the former and forcibly suggests what may be the condition condi-tion of affairs should Mormon control become entire over a state or territory |
