Show Terrific Explosion New York 21Early this afternoon a terrific explosion occurred on EdstTSd street between 2d and 3d avenues where Patrick Farley has men at work blasting blast-ing rock on the north side of the street It was caused by the carelessness of PatrickMonahan foreman in putting a number of dynamite cartridges to dry on a steam pipe The explosion shook the entire neighborhood and wrecked windows win-dows and doors of fifty fine houses adjacent adja-cent Flying glass splinters and falling bricks and furniture injuied several persons per-sons Monahan was arrested The de tonateon was heard all over the upper part of the city and was felt from 5th avenue to the East river and from 90th to 60th streot The explosion of the cartridges made a sort of crater about five feet in diameter and 10 inches deep in the sidewalk The shed over the boiler boi-ler was reduced to matchwood and the steam attachment which conveyed power to the drill was swept away Not one of the workmen was injured When the noise of the explosion was over cries of distress and alarm accompanied by the crash of falling glass and woodwork were heard in all directions in the immediate imme-diate neighborhood In a few moments thousands of persons attracted by the explosion swarmed around the excavation excava-tion and the residents o ° more than seventy houses left their homes in fear In several instances locks on doors shut when the explosion occurred were wrenched off Many window casings and shutters were broken and displaced and plaster fell from the ceiling Probably Proba-bly a dozen windows were wrecked in i houses remote from the scene of the explosion ex-plosion ou Fifth ATenue Seventyninth street Sixtyseventh street and First Avenue In all damage was done in I about seventyfive houses Monahans I theory is that a spark from the furnace ignited the fuse of one of the cartridges Eight persons only were slightly injured by the explosion Farley the contractor notified all householders who had suffered suf-fered that he would pay the damage and asked those injured to send him their doctor bills These will not be heavy The shock of the explosion caused some alarm in the public school on East Seventy Sev-enty fifth street but order was quickly restored |
