9 faxCiOf the people as a whole Turning I 4 fco the New Testament it would be seen 1 that the disciples were teachers of man 2 ind they were not sent to be taught In the institutions of the world but to a4 teach the children of men to bring i fckoseof the church to unity of the ni faith and one of the qualifications of It a bishop was that he should be apt to teach The bishop of a ward was likened unto a general iJJ who sends out his o aide decamp I to ascertain the condition of his forces t Ul TAiere are those who look upon the JJ office of teacher as of no very great im portance they are satisfiedto take advice fi ad-vice from those higher in authority they regard bishops and teachers as t tL spies sent to prY into ther private affairs I af-fairs such people are not well versed i in tke duties ot their official capacity Elder Naisbitt had heard the late Pres II1 11 Ii idcat Young speak of the teachers in D J Lgirage something like this When I ee one copies to my house I am but a subordinate of his though I am pres u ft ideaL of the church and 1 will listen to Lti tJJ I IMS counsel and bring my family near r to him that his visit may be a blessing b R to them The teachers may not be in feHsgeui men men versed in the lore of l the day but the Lord has to take the e creak things of the earth to confound I lie the wise Some who are teachers look th ipon their positions as comparatively so nmnfhiential He had noticed that tb did at fa those who visited his house so va longdeferred periods and generally appeared l1I ap-peared to be in a hurry to get away x This did not justify the importance di the position lie did dot know whatXe5r sl ther had but they seemed bashful and 21 tsimd and anxious to be over with ttieir visit A school teacher is not supposed 1 lo slight and treat with indifierence Ms pupils and be glad when the hour j 4 I for dismissal arrives A man to be successful suc-cessful in that vocation must be atten la J 1 Sre and deal with all of his pupils profession and that when school was is i overlie would prepare himself and ad f 3d to ahead of 4 vaace his own studies keep M 1 his pupils This was the secret of his va success Elder Naisbitt said he was II m subject to the influence of the teachers iea who visited him The families of all aa i j ineSaints should also be subject thereto i un there-to and if a teacher realizes the importance fill I import-ance of his position he will find that it I trifled with but one is one not te be n6 fsQiieh should occupy his attention and II zToI sstefiv all the time What would one Ji J1 Sunk of a farmer meeting meet-ing Friday night How can complete reports be made when they are so hurried He thought that every man who acts as a teacher should be one who when he enters upon his labors will want to enjoy the spirit of prayer IfJhe is a man of integrity and relies upon God he will enjoy the spirit of revelation and magnify his calling There was too little attention paid by teachers to the rising generation Elder Naisbitt thought The youth should be looked after If there are any who need counsel if there are any whc need warning against the temptations 01 life if there are any who require to be taught to restrain the exuberance of their youthful spirits the youth of Israel do The young men ana young women of the Saints are continually beset be-set by temptations tbere are non < more hardy or robust than they theii spirits are free but they should bt guarded against the tendency toward rowdyism misbehaviour disrespect tc their seniors protected from partaking of intoxicating drinks from the use of tobacco from vulgar lowborn and improper im-proper language their spirits should beheld be-held in restraint they should be taughi t to fear God to observe ail the laws and practices tending to the welfare of the human family they can be moulded bj their parents and when they meet a teacher they can look up to him and seek Inspiration and good lessons from him which will in after years caus them to revere and respect him This comes within the sphere of a teachers life When a teacher accomplishes his labor the feeling in every household should be Thank the Lord for the visit of the teacher for the influence he has brought and may he be long spared to do good and grow in the spirit of the gospel The teacher should call frequent upon the lukewarm luke-warm and indifferent and upon those in whose homes the seeds of apostacy have been sown The firesides of those who are out of employment and despondent des-pondent in consequence should also be visited and such should be coaxed and invited to mingle oftener with the Saints that they may enjoy more of the good spirit The lack of understanding this 3laS3 correctly and treating them rightly lias been the cause of many apostatizin The letalone policy should not be followed fol-lowed any longer by the teachers The examples of missionaries trove given ta show that they visited and preached tb jutaiders as well as members oT the church and that they labored witlidUi ence to keep those in the church who were weak in the faith He advised a similar course with those at hum1 lie thought that some teachers were too ready to report delinquencies which irose from mens weakness If anything any-thing arose from the weakness of a man o cause excommunication from the church it would be more in sorrow than in anger that the speaker would ift his hand against him He did not think that cutting a man off saved him The example was cited of the ancient who when he called upon a certain matriarch did not return thanks or favors shown him and the atriarch was about to turn lim from his door when the Lord appeared ap-peared and rebuked him by saying C Lo I have borne with him these many fears surely thou shouldst bear with him one night Errors were made in connection through ignorance of L mL 1 1 1 1 numamty une man wno reanzea ms own weaknesses was apt to he a fit one for the position of teacher If teachers were dutiful there would be a change and the authorities would be aided in controling and ministering to the I spiritual wants of the whole people It I was easy for him to theorize some I might say and they would add that the teachers had their daily avocations to attend to and did not get anything ior teaching He had been paid for all he ever did in the service of the Lord he had never made a sacrifice he was not rewarded adundantly for out of the treasury which the Lord had in constant I con-stant readiness to draw from God is not a taskmaster but will reward all who interest themselve in his work the laborer will receive the full amount of his earaings not in dollars and cents exactly but in peace happiness and the blessings resulting from the possession of the Holy Spirit Elder Naisbitt referred to the election for President on Tuesday next saying tat extraordinary efforts would be made by the different political parties to elect their choice and applied the lesson taught by it by remarking that anything any-thing worth much is worth laboring for The offices of bishop and teacher are worth more to Latterday Saints spiritually spiri-tually than is that of President of the United States He closed by exhorting all to faithfulness The choir sang the chorus Thanks be to God preceded by the solo 0 Rest hi tlie LordV sung bv iMrf Thomas 5 z i I 1 President H S Eldredge
