Show 2 PAUL A SCHjTajLER f Death of the Treasurer 1 df Salt 1akc Cihy j I y Paul A Schettler for many years treasurer of this city died at his residence resi-dence in the Twelfth Ward en Monday morning at 445 oclock the long illness under which Mr Schettler has been suffering ever since he was struck with l I paralysis in 1874 in a measure prepared I I his many friends for the event and the t h sad intelligence was received without I much surprise his pain lately has been 1 4 intense and he has frequently longed for F death to end hissuffermgs There were present at his bedside when he breathed his last his brother B H Schettler cashier of Zions Savings Bank L G Hardy his wife and one or two others Paul Augustus Schettler was born at Neuweid Rhine Prussia on the 13th of August 1827 He was baptized in New York by President Geo Q Cannon February 9th I860 and the same year came to Utah Six months later he was called and went on a mission to Holland and Switzerland from which he returned re-turned in 1861 and in September of that year was engaged by Mayor A 0 Smoot as City Treasurer a position which he continued to hold till his death Mr Schettler was a a man with a large circle of acquaintances by whom he was highly regarded as a man of high moral and sterling worth He I had ban excellent business education and had been one of the citys most efficient and useful officers I The funeral will be held tomorrow at2 oclock pm in the Twelfth Ward Assembly Rooms As soon as the news of Mr Schettlers t death reached the City Hall the City and Council was at once called together an informal session was held at 11 oclock am Mayor Sharp presiding and a quorum of the members being present The Mayor in a few well chosen words conveyed to the Council the sad intelligence intelli-gence that Paul A Schettler for many years Treasurer of Salt Lake City departed s de-parted this life between 4 and 5 oclock m the morning Monday and that a meeting had been called to consider the appropriate steps to br taken for properly prop-erly honoring the memory of deceased On motion the Mayor was authorized to appoint a select committee of three 1 I to draft suitable resolutions of respect f and to arrange the details for attending k t the funeral and report at the regular i sitting of the Council to be held this evening The committee chosen by the Mayor was Alderman Pyper Councilors i Clark and Wells |
