Show oF r Liqtor Cases I The saloon keepers are haying a I lively time againThe county is now making it pleasant for them Two or three cases are being disposed of daily before Judge Pyper the defendants de-fendants being found guilty in al mostlevery instanceThe arrests are made for running saloons without licenses On Friday some six eases were tried The fines amounted to about 1200 Two cases were made against each of the parties one for selling without a license on the 17th inst and another for selling without a license on the 19th inst It appears to be the intention of the county to continue making arrests against the parties and to double treble and quadruple cases on them if necessary neces-sary until a final decision is reached If the saloon keepers should lose it will be a terrible blow on them and will have the effect almost of using some up I Todav the case of N P Gray at I whose solicitation an alterative writ of mandamus was issued against Judge Pyper will come up and be heard it is believed before Judge Twiss Appeals have been taken in all the cases but the county has refused to send up a transcript from the justices court to the District Dis-trict Court until the appellants snail have paid the costs The writ of alterative mauaumus is issued directing the justice of the peace to send up a transcript or show cause why he has not done so While this mandamus case whatever what-ever the decision may be will not affect the merits of the case it will be a hard blow against the saloonkeepers saloon-keepers if the District Court holds the course of Judge Pyper in refusing refus-ing a transcript until the costs be paid to be good as the costs will amount to a handsome figure especially espe-cially if the cases continue to be piled up against each individual saloon keeper as the indications are they will be If the statute is worth anything this continued fight must some time or another result unfavorable un-favorable to the saloon keepers and when it does the other parties to the fight will make the most of it |
