Show 2SissJssIpp River Commission St Louis 24The Mississippi River commission is now in session here preparing pre-paring its tbid annual report to the secretary sec-retary of war to be submitted at the opening of the session of Congress with the Presidents message The report this year will be more voluminous and of more importance than has marked it in the past Heretofore the commission has reported from time to time on surveys sur-veys under its supervision but this year it will submit levels of precision from St Louis to Memphis These levels give the relative elevation of the benches at Columbus and Memphis and are true to the inch The report also contains the result of a triangulation from Cairo to Memphis which is to be used as basis for an exact map of the river It will contain also a report upon a series observations at Fulton Tenn from Nov 1879 to Nov 18SO also a report upon borings at various points between Cairo an Vicksburg The borings bor-ings many of which reach more than two hundred feet belowthe surface wore made for the purpose of determining whether there was any obstruction within the limit to which it might be deemed necessary to deepen the channel of the river that could not be washed away by the natural grinding of the current commission will further fur-ther submit a profile map of the high water of 1880 from Cairo to New Orleans of the low water of 1880 from Cairo to Commerce cut off below Memphis There will also be submitted a report of the work accomplished under the last appropriation ap-propriation of 1000000 |
