Show THE RICE I Ewing Wini in Three Straight Huts The long talked of race took place on Saturday but was not as interesting interest-ing as was generally expected There was a very large crowd present pres-ent at the start which increased along until a couple of heats had been trotted The general expectation expecta-tion had been that while the track would not be fast it would at least be good in this however all were terribly mistaken for it is a question ques-tion if a slower track was ever trotted trot-ted on here All down the homestretch home-stretch and past the stand on the outturn it was mud beneath which was the frozen ground Every time the horses would set their feet down the ground would cup out and the frozen bottom being reached they would slip It was painful to see them move in it the mare especially who appeared timid and could not be made to work She had the inside A start was easily effected and just as she left the stand she broke and lost her place She broke four times in that heat which was won easily by Ewing in 242 The succeeaing two heats Ewing winning in three straight was a repetition of the first Ewing winning easily the second heat in 241 and the third in 2AlTbe gait of the mare did not justify her breaking which she did on the slightest provocation and on the I best places on the track Ewing broke once on the outset of the third heat but quickly recovering himself rapidly regained the place the mare was taking from him TJle horse looked well and felt in magnificent condition He was I eager to go while the mare felt well Mr Travis could not make her work and ascribes it to her timidity on account of the bad condition of the track The race was lacking in any interest whatever and it seemed from the start that all present pres-ent settled down to the conviction that the horse would win Time bets were made and many who looked for good time were sadly leftAs As anticipated the race will not settle the relative merits of the animals but it demonstrates that Mr Travis well acquainted as he is with horses cannot manage the mare as well as her owner Mr Car rington can it seems to demonstrate demon-strate also that she will not trot well on a heavy track Had the conditions been as was anticipated as fine a track as the day was finethen the race would have been interesting probably prob-ably exciting but while the track was heavy and the horses did well the race lacked any interest whatever what-ever |
