Show J WE HAVE jdst run across an old print which suggests that the prophetic pro-phetic influence sometimes inspires even the humble cartoonist It is a doublepage cartoon by the inimitable inimit-able Gillam in a copy of Puck for May 1883 John Kelly is represented represent-ed as the tyrant Gesler and supporting support-ing him is the New York Board of Aldermen on a pole labelled ignorant Ig-norant voters Is hung the Tammany Tam-many hat to which are bowing such timid Swiss as Grady Thompson son Spinola and Cox but William Tell Cleveland proudly marches past his head erect and plumes waving in manifest contempt of the tyrant Gesler is fairly wild with rage over the marked scorn for him and his despised authority There is a volume in the cartoon telling a story which words cannot give in exquisite detail The prophetic spirit of the picture 13 now plainly apparent |
