Show ART f J h l ARTICLE VI s Editors Herald r t In reviewing the list df exhibits in the department of the territorial territo-rial fair I note next in ortler the imposing show cardof advertisements = advertise-ments by Mr W C Morris At a glance one can see that it was designed de-signed by an artist The graceful lines and the combination of geometrical geo-metrical forms conclusively prove < < that yet an admirer of the gentleman gentle-man could not avoid a regret that so mucnhad been attempted It is futile to say by way of apol ogyfor its defects that it was simply sim-ply meant for advertising To say this is to be disingenuous because it had a deeper signification it was intended as a sample of the versa tile talent of its author While it shows that in a manner very strik inglj it is not satisfactory to the friends of Mr Morris who know that he can do much better It was in many respects a great pro duction but the conception was by no means justified by the execution which shows the effect of hurried I and incomplete work in such a manner as to impress one with the idea that the painter reached beyond his ability With the lack of time and the small compensation in his mind the gentleman should not have attempted several of the more difficult features which if left out and simpler ideas had been introduced would have given better satisfaction both from a mechanical and an artistic standpoint Some of the work was really fine and surprised even his intimate acquaintances and to this extent as also for the general result the gentleman is to be congratulated congratulat-ed A silk banner from the same hand was touched with a delicacy truly artistic Mr Morris is a young man with fine talent and one altogether alto-gether worthy of encouragement He has been very successful in several sev-eral Hues of art but in what particular partic-ular he will make his greatest success suc-cess remains yet to be unfolded The D A and M Society diploma is a sample of his ability in one important im-portant direction The display of penmanship by IrA Ir-A J Phelps Testimonial to Bishop Hunter was really fine and elicited elicit-ed admiration from all people of taste who noticed it The writer called attention to it in several instances in-stances after it had been passed under un-der the impression that it was letterpress letter-press printing In this line the gentleman gen-tleman is evidently without a superior supe-rior in this section The work of Mr Hale in detail was quite fair but the conception and design lacked taste which however did not entirely en-tirely destroy the general effect The portraits by the same gentleman gentle-man showed careful work but they lacked artistic freedom so essential to good results in this department of art Another piece of penmanship penman-ship by one whose name need not be mentioned should have been excluded ex-cluded from the exhibition entirely Messrs Midgley bon showed a neat little specimen of sign writing on glass but the design while generally gen-erally good was much marred by an attempt to introduce ideas unsuited j un-suited to the work Particularly in regard to the name do these l Iem arks apply as it was so peculiarly done as to be almost illegible Some sign and ornamental work on glass by Mr M Lenzi attracted considerable consider-able attention by its quaint and somewhat pleasing effect It is positively shameful that this department depart-ment should be so poorly represented repre-sented when the ability of our artists in this line is remembered Portraits in India Ink by Mr P Hammer showed good taste and a careful attention to details but a coldness of feeling inappropriate and unnecessary in this character of work had the effect to detract somewhat some-what from their real merit which is in most respects of a high order The collection of photographs by Mr C E Savage was very creditable credit-able and evidently unapproachable I as he had no competitor in this line Some of the subjects show an effective arrangement of light and a skill in retouctiing which evidence an artistic taste J and a skilled judgment to seldom possessed by mere photographers who trust to the camera and a combination com-bination of lucky surroundings to produce that effect which Mr Savage by study and attention has completely mastered Much of the superiority of these works comes from a flue sense of light and shade and the really aesthetic taste of Mr Ralph Savage who inherits his fathers love for photography and combines with it a Jeen observation observa-tion coupled with a determination not to be excelled As to the general gen-eral display it was really excellent and speaks volumes for the energy and good taste of Mr C K Savage who is evidently not of the untutored untu-tored tribe Crayon Ijureby Mr P W Young showed good taste and a freedom which indicates talent Mr Helds specimens of wood engraving en-graving were interesting and as n samples of the first works Of a beginner be-ginner attracted some attention It is too bad altogether too bad that this was the only display in the line Hill and Hopwoods ornamental confectionery was placed in the art department because it was too utterly utter to put in any other The workmanship of course was the feature and it certainly showed good taste and an artistic conception concep-tion of the lines of beauty which reflected credit upon Mr Hill the manipulator The book printing and binding from the Contributor office the work of the Deserej News attracted considerable attention and many welldeserved encomiums for its general excellence < l hJ J The display in the same line from the Juvejiile Instructor was also verycrediitble Evidently no effort had been made to make a special exnibit in either of the above men tioned instances Hereafter let us hope that more interest will be shpwn and a better display made in this important department The Star Printing Company made a fine showing fin colored and plain printing which was really excellent ex-cellent Many of the designs indicated indi-cated art taste and the careful workmanship showed good training and an apt conception of the importance im-portance of the fart preservative This firm composed of young men with good taste and a fair share of business ability are gradually winning win-ning their way to public favor and at present writing are certainly ahead in their line n The display of gold medals and other jewelry by Messrs E J Swaner Co was one of the best and most artistic exhibits in the department partment The workmanship in some of the more delicate features of the designs reached into the region re-gion of high art and told plainly the folly of sending money east and I west for special designs in jewelry This display conclusively showed I these enterprising young men to beat be-at the very head of their profession and gave them a prestige which they can easily maintain by determina tionThe The collection of butterflies by Master J W Sugden was a tasteful display of insects which in their arrangement showed that the young gentleman has good ideas of the beautiful in nature and art In my next and last letter I shall I make some general remarks on art matters and have something to say of art students and of other artists who made no display at the fair |
