lofty and imposing structures struct-ures and rock paved streets there is much transpiring to notice and more going on than can be recorded and a brief commuuication will net suffice to contain what your correspondent corres-pondent would like to tell you In the first place the general aspect as-pect of the business houses and marts of merchandise on every hand and side announces the approach ap-proach of the holidays It is actually act-ually bewildering to take a stroll along the sidewalks of the principal princi-pal thoroughfares and take in the sights presented to tempt the buyers I buy-ers of holiday presents The I windows of the extensive dry goods estabhshmentswith the varied assortments as-sortments ot material for wearing apparel toilet articles gentlemens linen and underwear and brica brac are dressed in elaborate and costly style and nearly everything surmounted with a tastily printed reminder that it is an excellent holiday present and cheaper than the cheapest The jewelry stores of which there are a great many large and firstclass ones display a marvelous variety of rich and costly articled In gold and silver szliiig diamonds precious stories ally l inky jets set and worked into numberless fantastic and exquisite shapes by clever artists watches of every grade make and value from 85 I to 8500 distributed about with trinkets such as bracelets sets of jewerji cuff buttons studs etc etc cause one to ruminate upon their aggrgate cost and to say with JBer mudas I didnc think there was so much money in the world The emporiums for the rising genera tioncommonly called toy shops have on exhibition some of the finest as well as some of the flimsiest flimsi-est articles for the amusement and entertainment of the best crop that your informant ever saw everything fidni a five cent whistle to a twenty dollar dulf and from a livefora cent marble tu a twenty live dollar cook stove The book and picture stores amaze indeed time very faculty of eves with their vase and apparently endless vanities of everything in their lines butmostnotewo rthy are the Christmas Christ-mas and New Tear cards their combinations are beautiful unique and in the highest degree artistic The sweettoothed rambler can be accommodated with candies of any conceivable shape and flavor and whattickles a youngster more than to find some i nice painted sweet confectionary in its stocking on a Christmas morning Old Santa Claus is secretly thanked by thousands thous-ands of innoceLt little ones for his remembrance of them in giving them taffy In all conscience it is to be sadly regretted if there is any thing that can be wished for that can not be purchased ill this big place These exhibitions and displays are not all that remind one that Christmas comes once a year and W that the one that comesthis year is almost here The fouryearolds have been down town and seen the toy uispluys and teased and teased and teased and teased their mammas mam-mas for a tep cent trumpet Their name is legion and their occupation is annoyance Theres one consolation conso-lation well be used to their squeaking and squawking by the time they are tired of it If there were only a couple of hundred or so in the whole extent of the city one might get along but as I said before their name is legion Well Merry Christmas THE SAN FRANCISCO HOODLUMS This city is cursed with a class of creation called hoodlums Who ever gave them that namewhether it was their godfathers and godmother mother or trie malicious newspaper news-paper scribematters not it appears ap-pears to be an appropriate appellation appella-tion and everybody knows who to apply itto Jlerl for a hoodlum is known by his makeup You can tell him whereever you see him most on the corner where the gro cerj stlld whet you do teUhim mind you rlimt tell him anything sassy lie ii UisJngiiished from i the rest of mankind first by the cut of Mis jib which is ainguiarly 1 expressive ex-pressive of Jemmy 1 Twitchers velKinvotufi impudent phiz secondly by his dressand here I must say that in point of apparel he is passably decent the hoodlums hood-lums togs come nearer being a uniform uni-form shan anything else and thats why they can be told so readily They all well nearly all wear hats with stiff straight brims white shirts with turndown collars black coats padded at the shoulders very much to give them a squareness they do not otherwise have vests that seem to ave i been made lor somebody else and probably have and been appropriated pants that fit tight around the hips and legs until they reach the feet where they spread out like an inverted mushroom and cover two thirds of their pedal extremities Their trowser bottoms are economical in the end for if they did cost a few dimes more for clotb they save a good many dimes in boot blacking because only the toes of their shoe leather need polishing Thirdly the hangdoglazy swaggering bearing bear-ing of the animal gives him away and notifies respectable citizens of who and what he Is He is a dangerous dan-gerous thing sometimes his avocation avoca-tion is detestable his name is somewhat some-what dreaded his presence is better somewhere else and he is a very black shedp May your city never be cursed with theregular hoodlum and mayyour peace preservers keep a good lookout for all tendency toward to-ward hoodlumism and nip it in the bud strangle it in its infancy smother it at once THAT EKCIiROCITY TREATY For a long time the Chronicle of i this city has been dealing with the gross injustice worked by the reciprocity reci-procity treatment with the Sandwich Sand-wich Islands upon the people of the Pacific coast It has thoroughly exposed the appropriation by a sugar ring here of all the benefits intended to be bestowed upon the people by the treaty and the growth of a mammoth monopoly I which is becoming very defiant and arrogant It has published argument argu-ment alter argument against the treaty and the evils it has wrought in this and neighboring communities communi-ties It has given to the world straightforward statements of facts regarding the manipulations of Sir Claus Spreckeis Co in taking advantage of the treaty stipulations and building up a sugar monopoly in this city whose wealth and influence influ-ence are fabulous It has fought a good fight against this gigantic combination com-bination and stiH wages war on it It has been supported by the majority major-ity of the Pacific coast press and those papers which have not chipped in are few acid frail It advocates the abrogation of the treaty and no doubt Congress will be induced to take some cognizance of its remarks upon the subject The admission to this port of sugar from the Sandwich Islands free of duty enables the saccharine monopoly aided by the railroad monopoly to compete with and outrival eastern dealers who pay duty in supplying the States of Nebraska Colorado Missouri and Kansas with raw and refined sugars and this is an injustice in-justice to the eastern firms who contribute toward the revenue of the onvprnmpnl sJhnnlrl there Ita an attempt at this session of Congress Con-gress to terminate the treaty there will be a desperate fight and those in favor will require lots of capital mental and mintalas in its continuance con-tinuance there is as Colonel Sellers says millions and the sugar ring knows it Sic semper monopoly GENERALITIES The real estate business is fast becoming an important one here and the stock speculation is dwindling There will be no more panics I think on California street and the Stock Exchange will hereafter be known as a strictly business place and not as heretofore some sort of a gambling house Since the practical demise of the Sandlot element the prosperity of San Francisco has been very marked and today the majority of the law loving citizens dont care if they never hear lenis Kearneys name again A magnificent structure on Market street called Phelans Building i5 nearing completion and several of the prospective occupants oc-cupants are advertising that they will open January 1st Rents in it are high I am told that some of the stores will bring in Si400 I a month The theatres and places of amuse ment are doing well At the Baldwin Bald-win French Flats a very amusing amus-ing comedy has been running the past week cast to a good company fcMichal Strogoff is underlined to be produced for the first time in California thus anticipating Hav erlys production at the California At the Bush street theatre Alvin Joslin was played to poor business The Jollities succeeded and are immensely funny If they visit Salt Lake you should put on subs and see them Billy Emerson at the Standard is on his ninth week and has given good satisfaction changing his bills and adding to Ins company every week Au revoir A merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you and all your readers E |
