Show WEALTH SPEAKS A HERALD reporter yesterday I called upon a few of the wealthier gentlemen of the city for the purpose of learning their views concerning the propriety of going ahead with the Jordan and Salt Lake City Canal and also what they thought of the loan proposition to bo voted upon next Jilonday The ro ult of the brief interviews appears in this issue It will be seen that all these gentlemen are in favor of the canal and their Totes will be for the lean The ut moet confidence was expressed in the City Council with Mayor Little at its head These declarations should have great weight in the community The geLtemen interviewed represent 9 about onesixth ol the entira taxable property amounting to 7000000 They pay nearly one3ixth of the taxes collected in the corporatiou They are wise farseeing men mtn who look beyond the day and who do no forget within the hour They know that Salt Lake must have a larger supply of water or cease expanding ex-panding and soon become a second rate burg with large and prosperous neighbors on both side of her These gentlemen also understand that if the water supply is ever to be increased it must be done now while the element is yet free and unappro priated by others They see the folly of the narrowminded alow i i i coaches who Bay Let aa wait Let t the canal ba dug aa we can pay for t t it This policy would be simply a I waste of time and money and a reckless j reck-less disregard for opportunity j Another noteworthy circumstance in concection with these gentlemen is the fact that their land property id i t almoit exclusively within the present water limits and much of it on the two tiers of blocks fronting OB EAst Temple street Sow can an increased jupply of water lor irrigation purposes possibly add directly to the value of store banks and business offices The opponents op-ponents to the canal in the lower wards should reflect over this If these men who pay EO large a proportion propor-tion of the taxes are willing and even anxious to bear a dill larger share of the public burdens those who are tot to-t be directly benefitted ought not to l t complain The business men want the city to grow they want more people to come hero and create homes they want trade to increase and industries to spring up and thrive but they realize that these I things cannot be if the city is to be A rettrictsd as it now is i in its supply of I the essential element |
