Show OUR UNCLE EADLEY Is Not Altogether Pleased With New Tacoma Old Friends Heard From NEW TACOMA W TFeb 6 83 Editors Herald I Our party arrived here on the ocean steamer Dakota on the 16th ultimo as you have learned heretofore hereto-fore The party alluded to consists i of Charley Jenson of Sandy H C Bottsfcrd and C Bragonier of I Salt Lake City and the undersigned of nowhere in particular Expecting I Expect-ing to find an equable climate moist but mildI was very much I surprised to be met the night after our arrival with a regular blizzard 1 which has been followed up with alternate fits of rainsnow and hard freezing weather This stormy weather the mutual friend of the HERALD and myself E N Fuller Esq of the Tacoma News but formerly for-merly of the SALT LAKE HERALD I and numerous other journals attributes to my appearance here Perhaps he is right ia this as in almost al-most every thing else he does or says and by the way let me say here that he is the hardest worked newspaper man I have met in longtime long-time getting out the most newsy weekly paper within my knowledge knowl-edge and deserves a period of repose after a life spent in his favorite pursuit journalism but whether he will get it or not depends not on himself but upon the good sense of the people of the Sound Some days since Mr Jensen and myself started on a trip by steamer to the north wishing to see something some-thing more of the country than is to be seen in the vicinity of the terminus ter-minus When I get a little more time than is at my command at I present I may write a short ac count of the places visited ror cue information of jour readers or such of them as may desire to know what there is in this region At Whatcom Mr Jenson who was looking out for a farm left me and started on foot through the rain and mud to visit some property prop-erty said to be very desirable and as I was not hunting farms at present pres-ent I boarded the first steamer and returned to this place I have heard nothing since from my traveling travel-ing companion but presume he will turn up in time to take the steamer which leaves Tictorla on the 10th instant Mr Bragonier will remain here having already gone to work like an industrious young man that he is and no doubt will do well Mr Bottsford well I cant say what he will do possibly remain here ar he may go to Portland and J it is not improbable that he may revisit re-visit Salt Lake Citytime will tell And what are you going to do H D J 1 think some inquisitive person may suggest Well the truth is and it may as well be toldl am to a degree disappointed dis-appointed in my expectations I came here expecting to find the i terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad and here it undoubtedly is at present but how long it will remain re-main is a thing which no fellow can find out This New Tacoma is a town of some 3000 inhabitants There are on the plats of the place some 50 000 or 60000 lots of which about 5000 have already been sold You can buy a lot for 8100 or you can buy another for 5OOOyou pay your money and take your choice The former will be in the woods Hot Inttnr on PAmfif ftVPTdlfi There u u u are already sold some 800 or 1000 lots with building contracts attacked at-tacked which if complied with will show a large increase in buildings and make things lively while the work goes on The buildings are nearly all of frame only three being of brick and one church of stone The railroad rail-road company has erected some shops here where they manufacture and repair cars There are also in course of construction on the waterfront water-front some coal bunkers where coal is dumped andthence into vessels for shipment There are many things which I might and may add to the foregoing forego-ing but this scrawl has assumed such proportions that I must bring it to a close And In response to the imaginary inquiry will merely say that I started to come to this country thirteen years ago took a Rip Yan Winkle rest until now and believing that I an here too soon to know where the coming great city of the Sound will be I may retire and take another nap and wait for developments H D J |
