Show EXCHANGES New York 14 Clearing house returns re-turns show the following state of buii ness transactions for the week as compared com-pared with the corresponding week last year New York has gained 105 percent per-cent Boston 57 Philadelphia 61 Chicago 43 Baltimore 178 San Francisco 176 Pittsburg 195 Providence Prov-idence 213 Kansas City 576 New Haven 52 Memphis 508 j Portland 78 j Worcester 167 i Springfield 10 i Lowell 250 Syracuse 40 Cincinnati has lost 4 9 St Louis 29 New Orleans 62 Louisville 111 Milwaukee Mil-waukee 153 Cleveland 39 Hartford 105 Indianapolis 238 The Public says of this exhibit a real improvement elsewhere and apparent improvement at New York are seen The returns last week at New York of large exchanges were caused by extraordinary extraor-dinary sales of stock had the indications elsewhere were more satisfactory At six out of nine of the cities of the first olttta the exchanges are larger than they were a year ago and the losses at Cincinnati Cincin-nati St Louis and New Orleans are not as large as some of the minor cities making mak-ing unfavorable reportsbut 9out of 16 of these report gains by other speculations than in stocks The exchanges do not seem to have been affected more than they were for the corresponding week last year for although dealings in corn and petroleum were much larger last week the transactions in cotton were relatively small whereas for the weekending week-ending Februaoy 10 82 the sales here were 1397000 bales and the rapid decline de-cline was attended with much excitement excite-ment The difference in the aggregate of money paid or deposited on breadstuffs bread-stuffs cotton and petroleum In the reported markets can hardly have been as much as 500000 At Chicago there was active speculation in grain however and dealings in oil at Pittsburg were large which may account for the increase in-crease on the exchanges at these cities but there remains many others at which the payments last week were quite large and the aggregate outside of New York was fally up to the average of the second week of the month The occasion Justified a repetition ofthe caulongma more than once already It would be a great mistake mis-take to suppose that the business had ceased or has gone altogethor to the dogs though there are some serious embarrassments embar-rassments If Congress were once out of the way with a tolerable tariff bill pilled wo suspect that business would suddenly expand The situation is largely due to the fact that nobody knows what mischief Congress may do |
