Show 1LYH CONGRESS SECOND SESSION aNTiS Washington 14The tariff bill was resumed the pending question being on agreeing to the amendments amend-ments made in the committee of the whole Several amendments were lost Morrison offered an amendment that after July 1 IBM no higher duty shall be levied on any article in the metal schedule than 15 r percent per-cent ad valorem Bayard as a preliminary to restoring re-storing the paragraph laying a duty on books which had been struck out in committee of the whole moved to amend the language so as to restrict re-strict the duty to books wholly or partly in the English language Agreed to YanWyck introduced a resolution of inquiry calling on the secretary of the treasury to inform the Senate Sen-ate of the expenses incurred last year for special counsel by the department de-partment of justice and by what authority bills were audited Laid over and printed HOUSE Washington 14The House went into committee of the whole on the tariff bill the pending paragraph being that imposing a duty of 45 per cent en manufacturers articles or Ymr partly or wholly made of metal Lost Cox offered an amendment frr the admission of foreign built ships on pavment of a duty of 30 per cent ad valorem Lost Holman moved to strike out the clause imposing a duty of 15 percent per-cent ad valorem on timber hewn or sawed and timber used for spars and in hnililinO tin Tn F b 4 g v White moved to increase the rate to 20 per cent Lost Anderson moved to strike out the whole clause relative to sawed lum ber Lost Cox moved to reduce the duty on hubs wagon blocks etc from 20 to 15 per cent ad valorem The amendment was lost as were several other amendments looking to the reduction of duties Having concluded the considera tion of the wood schedule without making any change the committee rose Recess |
