Show 1 OUR KEW QUARTERS A BriC Dtscriptioi of the Building Now Bfteg Erected A Handsome and Complete Office For some considerable time past the increasing business in the several sev-eral departments of THE HERALD has created a pressing necessity for more room and the subject of building build-ing has been under consideration with a view to erecting suitable premises as soon as a desirable spot could be secured for that purpose The most desirable advantages in this respect have been acquired in the purchase of the corner north of the Continental hotel which was effected last month the deed coming com-ing from Messrs Lawrence and Hampton In possession of this eligible corner THE HERALD feels itself established permanently in what will soon be the very heart of the business district During the brief space of one month since the purchase was made tenants have been removed from the old buildings build-ings the old structures taken down three hundred cubic yards of earth excavated an immense basement walled in and so much of the brick walls laid up as were seen when the masons laid down their trowels Tuesday evening The lateness late-ness of the season and the imminent danger of severe frosts have rendered ren-dered rapid work a positive necessity I neces-sity and the energy and speed with I which the contractors are pushing ahead give evidence that no effort will be snared to rnnrmlfltft thA work before winter with its cruel severity makes progress impracticable Mr M Thomas who has the contract con-tract for the mason work says if he is favored with anything any-thing like fair weather he will have the walls ready for the roof in two weeks and this too without injuriously in-juriously precipitating matters i The work thus far particularly the fine stone and water tables is exceedingly ex-ceedingly creditable and indicates the intention of the builders to work for reputation George Romney Esq who represents the influential firm of Taylor Romney Armstrong has charge of the woodwork as well as the general supervision of the building and those familiar with the gentlemans characteristic energy will require no rgument to convince them that the work under his direction will not drag The building will be 30 feet south front running 100 feet north and will be carried three stories above the elevated b3sement The front walls are being construeted of light colored uniform brick from the kilns of John A Groesbeck Esq and will present an altogether pleasing contrast from the redbrick red-brick fronts so common The fine basement is being fitted up for the large power and joo presses and will afford also room for a I paper warehouse being admirably admir-ably lighted from the elevated windows All of the first floor with the exception of twenty j leet on the south which is laid off for the business office will be elegantly ele-gantly arranged for stores with east fronts Of these there will be four with iron and glass facings and high ceilings and with one exception they are all engaged for occupancy There will also be a room on the west of the business department suitable for a nice office to rent which completes the first floor On the second floor suites of rooms will be arranged with all the conveniences conveni-ences desirable for office purposes and will be rented with the exception excep-tion of two reserved for the editorial editor-ial department Several of these suites have already been spoken for and it is probable that before the building is completed every avaiable office and store room will have been eugaged The entire third floor will be set asidefor the compositors job printers and the book bindery each of which departments will be facilitated facili-tated with all the latest improved machinery With a view to supplying supply-ing that class of work which eastern houses have heretofora furnished to a considerable extent we have imported i im-ported power machinery for a most complete book bindery and paper ruling establishment which with the acquisition of additional facilities facili-ties in the job printing department will enable THE HERALD to offer successful competition in fine work with eastern institutions In these respects the new building has been admirably adapted and will be as perfectly equipped The architectural work has been performed by Mr William S Hedges and does that gentleman much credit as will be seen hereafter here-after If no serious frosts are encountered encoun-tered the building will probably be ready for occupancy shortly after Janurry 1st 1884 |
