Show Assaulting Officers Mars must be on the ascendant in this vicinity as a couple of parties assaulted police officers yesterday A fellow named Thoj E Smith had stolen a coat a day or two ago but bad not been discovered yesterday however he went into a room in the Overland House and made away with blanket pictures etc committed some filthy acts and was arrested by Officers Smith and Thomas They started off with him and according to their story bed gone but a shot distance when Officer Smith returned to get witnesses and Thomas kept on with the prisoner Mr Thomas says the fellow then told him to carry the blankets he had stolen Thomas declined when a brief talked tntued and the fellow said Bv God you will dropped the duds and clinched with Thomas A rough and tumble fight followed and Thomas was downed Smith happened to turn and seeing the wrestling and his brother officer under ran up and struck the prisoner on the head cutting a gash pulling him off handcuffing him and dragging drag-ging him for a distance then putting him iu a job wagon and taking him to jail He abused the officers all the way with his tongue and called them all manner of vile names Upon being arraigned before the judge he was fined 50 for stealing the overcoat and was so cheeky and used such profane and foul language in the court that the judge fined him 20 for contempt He called Officer Smith a sn of a bh and swore he would kill him in the court room Being EO fearfully unruly the judge said he would postpone post-pone tie trial of the prisoner on the other charges until he had cooled down and wuld be disposed t be more civil A great del of talk was indulged in on the streit yesterday about the affair many insane and premature opinions expressed and tha officers abused right and left The charge of siult will doubtless ba tried today and witnesses wit-nesses called when i will be shown whether the officers were justified in striking the prisoner A young fellow from Mill Greek named C E Miller was on a grand spree last evening sod cut up considerably I con-siderably on Main street Captain nh iL5 J h n 1 n < f DUlL WalKcU up lU UlUl ouu ijuituij I told him he had better go home Without another word being said I and without any expectation Miller hauled off and struck the captain a I forehead good square blow in the laying him out on the sidewalk Ho will answer the charga of assaulting ing an officer befcre Judge Pyper today to-day |
