Show > UOVEBHOE ZMEHY Governor Emery will arrive home thin evening after an absence in the east of six weeks He went away an official representing the federal government gov-ernment in this territory as ita chief executive he comes back a private I citizen We can take this occasion to inform the gentleman that although there is some change in his circum stance he has lost none of the respect of his friends or the people With all I who have knowledge of late occur I ranees in his career he stands higher and shines brighter than ever before A disgraceful fight was made against him and disreputable meAns and methods were employed to overthrow him but it must be gratifying to all to know that Governor I Go-vernor Emery stooped to no dirty work and was guilty of no low trickery in the struggle He met the base and baseless charges against his honor and honesty manfully and overcame them coming out on top That he was net reappointed Is not due to unfitness in any respect for the office nor can his half dozen real enemies here take to themselves the least credit for his displacement He answered all accusations satisfied everybody that the senseless charges I i were based solely upon personal malice of a few Boreheaded individuals individ-uals and showed clearly to the minds of the cabinet officials that he had > nil the qualifications requisite in the governor His removal l is due solely to the idiosyncrasy of President Hayes who alone is responsible re-sponsible and to blame for the shabby I t treatment of Governor Emery It i was shabby tieament of the Governor r Gover-nor for we have occasion to know that Mr Emery would never have placed himself in the position to bet be-t g j snubbed had it not been for the personal per-sonal encouragement held cut to him f I by Mr Hayes It was a scurvy thing to do and an act unworthy the President Presi-dent of the United States to lead the Governoron as he did subject him to nnecessary abuse and then strike his hta3 off Mr Hayes may have I bought that he woald disgrace the Governor but it ia Mr Emery and not the President who figures with credit and honor in the contest As a private citizen of Utah Mr Emery will hell all the respect and esteem that he commanded as Governor The Legislative Assembly has just shown in what high regard the members mem-bers held his excellency by creating a county and naming it for himan honor and mark of respect bestowed upon none of his predecessors This little courtesy is 8gnificant as showing I show-ing that tho efforts of a federal official hero to do right are appreciated Governor Emerys course here is also proof that it is not necessary for the Governor to declare war upon the people the moment he seta foot in he territory nor is he required re-quired to proclaim himself an enemy to and oppressor of those he is sent to govern and whose laws I he is required to see enforced We wish that all federal official could be made to understand what Governor Emery knew to be true that it is better for the community nod for individuals to have harmony and good feeling prevail and that the strife and the quarreling that some are bent on fomenting are injurious to the territory terri-tory and all its inhabitants We heartily welcome Governor Emery back to Utah feeling confident confi-dent that he will be as gool a citizen as he has been a Governo |
