Show TELEGRAPHIC p THE LONDON EXPLOSIONS Great Damage Done by the Fe nians London 3tThe excitement over the explosions in the underground railway last night is very great A large number num-ber of policemen under special inspectors were on duty all night at various railroad stations and guarding the line A heavy force is also watching the line The explosion ex-plosion at Charing Cross occurred a distance of 200 yards west of the station There was no train there at the time The walls of the tunnel were chattered but the rails were not misplaced The windows in the station were blown out The roof was not damaged No person was hurt At Praed street station the force of the explosion was terrible The tunnel there was not destroyed bat a deep hole was excavated in the road bed Bricks were blown out and gas pipes and telegraph lines broken The refreshment saloon was wrecked and the windows of the other room of the station shed The explosion occurred immediate und r a passing rain forty yards from the elation ela-tion All persons injured were in the last two carriages Twentyeight ter sons were wounded and taken to the hospital Four of them were serioubiy hurt but are fxpected to recover The others are able to go to their homes tonight to-night Both explosions occurred ab ut 810 in the eveuing All detectives of the Metropolitan police are searching for the perpretra tors of the outrages and railroad officers i I are assisting them Tho police deny that any pocket cartridge was found near the scene of the explosion No trace is discovered of the nature of the explosion It is ascertained the explosion could not have been caused ty coal gas No clue to the persons causing the explosion id obtained Manager Majendle of the board of trade is now 11 am making an examination of the sceneof the explosion explo-sion at Charing Cross Trains are running run-ning as usual this morning Three oclock No explosives as yet found at Breed street station An inspector in-spector from the home office viewed tire scene of the explosion there and afterwards after-wards examined the damaged train He expressed the opinion that cartridges made of the first order of explosives such IB guncotton were used and the guard states that while looking out of the car window just after the train left Praed station he saw some sparks nearly underneath un-derneath the carriage and immediately afterwards heard the explosion The explosive used at Charing Cross station was in small quantity It is not be ieved that it was dynamite New York ODonovan ROSES states that the explosions yesterday in the underground railway London were the work of the Fenian + Brotherhood of whose movements he is apprised London Lon-don would be in ashes he aid before long unless England gave up Ireland New developments might be expected at any moment for it was now the intention inten-tion of the brotherhood to reduce Eng land 10 submission The police warned the railway officials three months ago that they had advices from America of the threatened explo sion and precautions were taken to provide against them The explosives used last evening were powerful but in limited quantity the holes in the ground and brick work being small LA TBS The persons arrested were all discharged for want of criminating evidence evi-dence The explosive was in glass shells of the size of pigeon eggs Fragments Frag-ments of the shell found were perforated with small holes The shells had been charged with nitroglycerine Glasgow 31 Precautions are taken here against explosions on railways All banks public buildings and prisons era clopely watched Extra wardens are placed around the prisoners when exercising exer-cising |
