Show I TELEGRAPHIC IJ IJ J II I SHERMAN SUBSIDES I Retirement of the Old Soldier Washington 31The correspondence incident to the retirement of Genera Sherman is published today The I General in addressing the Secretary of Wa snows that while his bgal term of office does not expire till February L 1884 that season of the year is not suited to the changes necessary on his retirement retire-ment He then say J have long contemplated con-templated anticipating the event some months to enable the President to make these chengesat a more convenmnt season sea-son of the year and also to enable my ucceseor to be in the office before the assembling of tne next Congress In thj e ore request authority to turn over the comm na of the army to Lieutenant General heridan on November 1 1883 and that I be ordered to my home at St Loui there to wait the date of my legal retirement and inasmuch as 1 will have for a long time much correspondence about the army unofficial I alo ass the Javor to have vvi i h me my two persona aidesde camp Col nel John E Tourte lotto and John M Bacon The others of my personal staff vz Colonel M Poe and J C Tidball have already been assigned as-signed to appropriate duties in their own branches of military service All should retain their rank and pay as aides decamp until February 4th 1884 By or before the let of November I can complete all official reports and I believe I can surrender the army to my successor in good shape and condition well provided in all respects and distributed distrib-uted for the best interest of the country coun-try I am grateful that my physical and mental strength remains unimpaired by years and I am tbankful for the liberal provision made by Con gross for my de dining years which will enable me to respond promptly any call the President Presi-dent may make for my military services or judgment as long as I live Secretary Lincoln replies to the effect thai the President has acceded to all the requests made in the generals letter and concludes as follows The President directs me to express to you his earnest hope that there may yet ba given you many years of health and happiness in which to enjoy the gratitude of your fellow fel-low citizens well earned by your distinguished distin-guished public services Lieutenant General Sheridan accompanied accom-panied by Col Sheridanhis military 0rc retry and Lieutenant Colonel Gregory aidedecamp arrived in Washington this morning from Chicago General Sheridan Sheri-dan and party visited the War department depart-ment about noon and paid their resprcts to Secretary Lincoln General Shermiu and Adjutant General Drum The transfer trans-fer pf the commani of the army from General Sherman to Lieutenant General Sheridan will be made tomorrow |
