Show THE TRULY good people of the little Connecticut village of Lake rille are engaged in a lively religious relig-ious contest that time and the principles prin-ciples of cleanliness will have to settle A Catholic priest it appears ap-pears set up a crucifix in front of the church and refused to take it down at the request of a committee of Protestants This refusal caused Protestants to decline the use of certain steamboats for a Catholic excursion whereupon the Catholics boycotted Protestant merchants buying their provisions and dry goods of their own church fellows or in other towns The Protestant wive3 mothers and daughters now entered the field and took a conspicuous part in the con They discharged their trover y Catholic servants withdrew their patronage from Catholic milliners and dressmakers and solemnly pledged themselves to employ no more Catholic help in any form They are sending south for colored cooks housekeepers and washerwomen washer-women It is presumed the wenches when they arrive will have to produce pro-duce religious certificates or else submit to a theological examination before an organized board of orthodox ortho-dox Protestant ministers The fight seems too childish for sane men and women to be engaged in but it is said there is not a person in the town who has not taken sides in the senseless controversy Protestant Protes-tant ladies pending the arrival of colored servants are heroically doing do-ing their own work while their husbands hus-bands are doing duty as grooms and I menofallwork about their homes offices and places of business |
