Show A Flood Theory Indianapolis 20In connrction with the floods there is presented today an interesting article that will attract attention atten-tion of scientists It is alleged to be a fact clearly shown at this recent convention conven-tion of the tile makers in the city that large areas of land formerly marshy have been reclaimed by the liberal use of tile and it was also shown that notwithstanding notwithstand-ing the extraordinary Increase in the number of life factories the demand was so great that prices had advanced The i water taken off the surface by tile must generally find its way thence to the rivers B J W Billingslay editor of the Drainage Journal when spoken I to with regard to the matter said there were about 2500 tile factories in Ohio Indiana and Illinois with a capacity of 800000000 feet a year all the tile made within the last six year had been used He therefore made a rough estimates that in the three states named between 300000 and 400000 miles of tile was now used the water which coursed through most of these ultimately finding its way to the Ohio or Missouri River He said tila laid to a depth of three or four feet did not carry off tha water rapidly ra-pidly enough to suddenly swell the volume ol water in the rivers and streams but the flow was very rapid when it was laid near the surface He admitted the tendency of the drainage I was to increase the normal depth of water in streams and ho believed the general effect of such extended drainage would be to make the floods in Ohio and Missouri higher and higher from year to year |
