Show BAN FRANCISCO The Agitation Worbiris Up Kearney Defiant His House an Arsenal Government Policy Etc San Francisco 9During the day about 150 men have been engaged in obtaining signatures to the roll of the Citizens Protective Union with decided de-cided success To a very considerable consider-able extent the project finds favor with the business class though many questions are asked The Bulletin eLlis evening treats the subject editorially edi-torially under the heading of Organizing Or-ganizing Prosperity taking the Ground that the organization means just what it says tho preservation of peace protection of life and property a restoration of confidence the security se-curity of life and propeity horn all violence and the restoration of legitimate I legiti-mate commerce industries and the business of the people by peaceful methods within the law and approves ap-proves the undertaking us tending to act as a safeguard against mob violence vio-lence and vicious legislation It may be said that there are many who do not accept this view of the organization organi-zation but assume that something of a more radical nature is contemplated hinting at ordering incendiary agitators agita-tors out of the city or even more pronounced measure It is difficult to learn anything regarding the plans of the union more than is set forth in its manifesto If there are any secrets among its promoters they are well kept The Post this evening publishes the following brief reference to the subject We have a strong municipal and slate government quite able and willing to suppress any unlawful assemblage whether its headquarters are at tbe sand lots or in the secret chamber The workingmen have not yet been heard from Kearney was interviewed tonight on tbe subject of the vigilance com mittee and kindred matters He is defiant and evidently looks on the present excitement ag furnishing him with fresh weapons He says the workingmen are peaceable and law abiding that the city ia entirely safe lU ineir nanue ana mat it is only the Chine e employers and stock gam ilera who threaten to make any trouble He affecta to treat the formation for-mation of the vigilance committee with contempt and to believe they will not daro to molest him but it is noticeable notice-able that he has made a perfect arsenal of hit residence This morning he bought a Winchester rifle which he keeps in his sleeping room and both his brothers who live with him are provided with revolvers and shotguns shot-guns Kearney declares his inten tion of keeping up the agitation and swears that if violence used to stop him speedy and terrible vengeance will hfl trvtfinES As rnnnternpfirm in I the vigiIanteshe proposes to who d all the employers of Chinese responsible for their action and declares his intention of making a list of 200 names of whoever he has reason to suspect of being concerned in it and reading it at the sand lots Everyone of these < men who do not clear themselves of the suspicion that they are prime movers will be denounced de-nounced ai assassins and marked for retribution Kearney made a brief speech at a ward meeting in the Irish American Hall this evening in which he took substantially the aboveground above-ground and attacked bitterly the men who ore supposed to be promi I L nent in the vigilance movement The crowd applauded his threats vociferously vo-ciferously Washington 5There has been 10 change today in the attitude of be Washington authorities concern i ng the situation of affairs at San Francisco It remains simply one of watchfulness and preparation to respond re-spond to the call of the governor for assistance to preserve the peace incase in-case he reports that the stale forces are inadequate to the purpose The efforts assiduously made by certain parties to convince the administration administra-tion that the board of health condemnation condem-nation of Chinatown was merely a pretext for the forcible expulsion of the Chinese from that city and therefore the federal government in view of the guarantees of the Bur lingame treaty ought to interpose to prevent its execution have failed to produce the desired result and there is no reason to believe that the personal per-sonal representations of delegations from the Chinese Six Companies who it is rumored are on the I way to Washington will be any more effectual There is good reason to believe the Six Companies are by no means in favor here even by the Chinese legation It is felt that these Six Companies with their immense im-mense revenues derived from the mass of their countrymen in California might themselves long ago have averted the Board of Healths order by devoting some of their money to the sanitary improvement of Chinatown China-town and as illustrative of their cold blooded parsimony it is known in Washington that the Chinese not long ago wero informed that tho Six Companies positively refused to contributa a few hundred dollars out of their reserve of perhaps 1000000 a year to defend a China man on trial for his life and that the requisite amount was sent to California Califor-nia from Washington by members of ff the Chinese legation as an act of f charity and humanity |
