Show A STRANGE STORY The Alleged Discovery of the Murder Mur-der of Valentine Fanbel Which Proves to be a Grand Fraud Oa the 17th of last August e man named Valentine Faubel was found dead in this city and many believed he had been murdered bat the general impression prevailed that it was caused by apoplexy This was also held to be the case by the coroners jury after a post mortem examination by some physicians who stated that the probable cause was apoplexy The matter retted in this shape until a day or two ago when what was supposed sup-posed to be sufficient evidence to declare de-clare that Faubel had been murdered I came to light The matter was fol lowe up and resulted in the swearing out of d warrant by Attorney Van Ztle charging one J Varcoe with the murder The warrant was placed in the hands of Captain Greenman who went 1 Alta yesterday and brought Varcoe to town last nigh Tho real causo of too arreat La beoo kept quiet but the story in cir Oblation concerning tae matter is ui follows A few days ago a person wan discovered with a watch formerly owned by Faubel on his person this wa taken to a prostitute in town named Em Sadler and ahown to her As soon as she raw it she expressed great concern and told them to take it away from ber Watch was kept on her and a day or two ago she took a letter to the pOEtoffice which was finally tak n out and found to be addressed ad-dressed to an Italian named Antonio but inside was found a note to Var coe This note warned him that he I was suspected and told him to come Ito I-to town that night and meet her at I he place where she met him on the I E night of Faubels murder I The letter was taken to the girl J and upon being confronted with it eho was arrested She then said she old tell the whole affair i they would release her and the warrant for the arrest was served out as stated Her story was that she and Varcoe were out waking on the night and that meeting Faubel Varcoe struck him with a tl ing shot and that she held him by the throat while Varcoo rifled his pockttj They did not stunned thick he was killed and left him as As soon as Varcoo wan brought to 1 town Mr Charley Road superintendent superin-tendent of the mine at which Varcoe worked began to gather proof and produced the navrolJs which showed beyond a shadow of 1 doubt that every day in August Varcoo hud worked lull days bt sides there were any number of men ready to swear that he was at work on that day and through the whole month The matter was taken under consideration and Varcoe released ou his own recognizance to appear at 9 oclock this morning It now appears that the true status of the matter is 55 follows On Wednesday night a fellow named Glassner purporting to be a deputy marshal but who is not one took this girl before Judge VanZile and accused her of the crime which she cIme denied Ha immediately put his hand in her overcoat pocket and pulled out n letter which ho read and which was addressed to this Varcoe warning him as above stated Th girl then confessed the affair and tho complaint was made out and Varcoe arrested The girl bad been confined in the White House all through yesterday so far as is known without any authority from anyone until last night when Mareual Shaughnessy took her in charge and she was questioned ques-tioned about the matter She then statc that the whole matter was gotten got-ten up a a joke and that there was nothing in it The affair nevertheless neverthe-less will be thoroughly silted and the details ascertained Tho way it stands cow ia anything but complimentary mentary to Glassner and it looks as though the perpetration of an immense im-mense fraud has been attempted |
