Show r rr JATh T TIWtAt8 The BsllrGBd Wreelz Ian Francisco 23As a result of some of the evidence taken at the inquest of the victims of the Tehachapi disasterand of inquiries by detectives the railroad officials state they are now convinced the accident was not due to carelessness on tho part of their employees but was the result of an attempt to rob the express car They claim that the hand brakes were properly set by the brakemen before getting off the train That one brakeman escorted es-corted a lady to the station and returned re-turned towards the train which was still in position That his light went out and after he had reentered re-entered the station and lighted ithe found the train gone It is held that on such a grade the train could not have stood moment if left unbraked and that furthermore the engines and air brakes could not have been disconnected unless the train had been held by the handbrakes I hand-brakes to ease the strain They express the belief that the brakes were properly set and the train was tampered with It is known that when the train drew into the station sta-tion two men were seen there who were subsequently found dead in the wre kand who are as yet un identified These men it is thought were part of a gaag that attempted to rob the train and in order to effect their object let oft the brakes and started it down She grade in order to get it away from help and in a position where tne express car could be robbed Being inexperienced in-experienced they lost control of the train and the accident occurred Further evidence is adduced that no tramps were on the train before reaching Tehachapi while two were found amidst the wreck |
