Show i THE PARK HOMIcIDE I j Friends of the Dectastd Make a Statement SALT LAKE CITY Sept 13 81 Editors Herald As an act of justice to the memory mem-ory of the deceased Prank Riley who was killed at Park City on Sunday Sun-day last we respectfully request the publication of the following statement state-ment which is substantially correct and which will go to prove that the act was one of mature deliberation and not one of self defense The circumstances at the time of the shooting as published by you are in the main correct but the movements of Scott previous thereto will go to prove that he intended I in-tended acting as he did In a conversation con-versation the night previous with I one of the men employed at the minehe stated that he soon intended leaving the camp but before doing so he had some grievances to settle He was asked if it referred to mining min-ing claims and he replied no it was private matters ending with the remark that Frank ORiley would never see the water out of the shaft On Sunday morning after Scott was discharged by Mr McKay he was called back by OEiley but refused to come and is fair to presume that he had not at that time the revolver with him but proceeded immediately to town to procure the weapon After a few hours delay he returned to the mine and meeting one of the men requested re-quested him to tell Frank that he was there and if he had anything to say to him he was ready for him The man refused to do so and stating that if there was going to be a row he wished to have nothing to do with it Scott then went into the office and waited there until ORiley came out of the mine and as he was going to his dinner Scott hailed him and the shooting took place as publish today Had Scott been in fear of his life he could easily have avoided the difficulty as he had been discharged early in the morning and had u o further business busi-ness there The statement that he made to the officers in presence of witnesses immediately after his arrest ar-rest that ORiley drew a knife on himis a base fabrication as ORiley was but seldom known to carry arms of any kind It is true that ORiley possessed a hasty temper and at times made remarks I which he afterwards regretted He was loved and respected by all for his good and generous heart his untiring industry and his strict attention to duty He was a kind husband affectionate son and brother and a devoted friend and the space he has left is one not easily filled In reference to the report circulated circu-lated that Scott was backed in this outrage by other parties we desire to stamp it as a base and false insinuation in-sinuation and entirely unworthy of credence Thanking you for your kind indulgence in-dulgence and trusting we have not trespassed too much on your valuable I valu-able space We remain yours etc A PEW FRIENDS OF DECEASED |
