Show LATEST TELEGRAMP BETTER The President Determined to Get Well Sitting Up and Looking at the Ocean About the Lung Trouble Long Branch 12Agnew says this evenings bulletin was a favorable favor-able one and he could not say more than was contained in it if he should talk an hour Mr Boynton adheres to the opinion that the lung complication compli-cation is the result of blood poisoning poison-ing Yet he contends that the Presidents Pres-idents vitality is sufficiently strong to overcome any serious results from it providing no further complications com-plications of a similar character occur Swain and Rockwell are encouraged en-couraged by favorable indications and say the day has undoubtedly been a good one Rockwell refers to President Garfield as an extremely ex-tremely intelligent patient and says lie placed more confidence in his action when comparing his condition con-dition from day to day than on the opinions of others The President is a man not afraid of death and has no more idea of dying than any of us who are enjoying good health He considered furthermore that if the President should be near deaths door and in full possession of his faculties that his great intelligence intel-ligence would enable him to comprehend com-prehend the fact and he would not hesitate to give due notice to those around him Hamilton arrived tonight and Agnew will leave in the morning At 1030 tonight the President was sleeping and in the opinion of Hamilton and Agnew there was every prospect for a favorable night There has been no febrile rise The temperature and respiration respira-tion are normal The pulse has not been taken during the day UG has taken nourishment freely There has been no further annoyance from the stomach When Hunt called on the esident today he informed him there was no business in his department requiring the Presidents Presi-dents attention It hno boon the custom of the President to refer to the secretary in nautical terms and after shaking the hand of thePresi dent today the secretary pointing Cowards the ocean remarked Well Mr President I see you have had to retreat to my domain Yes said the President there it is and isnt it beautiful beauti-ful toor The President today expressed a wish that he would soon lie able to sit in a rocking chair and look out on the ocean The day as a whole is said to have been a favorable one The parotid trouble has practically disappeared The wound is in excellent condition The President expresses himself as reeling reel-ing better and no further developments develop-ments have occurred in the vicinity of the right lung the latest complication compli-cation Notwithstanding the favorable favor-able day the suppuration difficulties which the inflammation of the lung might occasion while under control remain a serious obstacle and will necessarily cause grave apprehension apprehen-sion for several days to come This is acknowledged by Agnew and Hamilton New York 12 Tribunes Long Branch A railing on top of the I portico outside of the Presidents window was removed today to give i him an unobstructed view of the ocean The sentinel pacing his beat on the edge of the bluff gazed earnestly ear-nestly up toward the sick room window win-dow as he passed and was honored by a military salute from the hand I of the President I TUESDAYS RECORD Elberon N J 13830 amAt the examination of the President at S am today his temperature was 994 pulse 100 respiration 20 He passed a comfortable ht sleeping most of the time and on the whole his condition this morning is encouraging en-couraging and gives promise of a good day Signed D W BLISS F H HAMILTON IN A CHAIR At 11 am the President sent for I the r surgeons and Drs Hamilton Bliss and Boynton hurried over creating some alarm by their rapid movements The surgeons were in the cottage but about fifteen minutes min-utes When they emerged Dr Hamilton said the President being very desirous to be moved from the bed into an invalids chair and feeling feel-ing strong enough to stand a change had sent for the doctors to have it made We lifted him into a chair where he now sits in a reclining potion po-tion enjoying the change of position posi-tion very ni ucli The President was allowed to remain in the invalid chair thirtyfive minutes and was lifted back to his bed at 1150 am There were no ill effects from the change of position Physicians say they will allow him to sit in the chair at least once a day so long as the present favorable condition continues con-tinues The President feels convinced con-vinced that he is growing strong and is much gratified at the results which justified his judgment of his ability to stand the change which he requested The Presidents condition continues contin-ues favorable No evil effects were experienced from his being placed in his reclining chair and there was no change in his pulse or tempera ture in consequence of his removal from bed and back again The President e joyed the change He was placed in a position commanding command-ing a furl view of the ocean and elevated to an angle of about forty five degrees He was removed to his bed at i is own request not because be-cause he was tired but because he considered it best not to overdo tIe t matter The febrile rise was scarcely perceptible last night and what little there was continued un til the morning dressing which accounts ac-counts for the temperature noted in I the morning bulletin Bliss still maintains that the President is convalescent con-valescent and that there are no in dications of bloodpoisoning He holds that the lung complication is gradually passing away and does not apprehend any further trouble from it He says the existence of trouble in that organ has been known by the surgeons for several weeks past and the crisis came cn Sunday which day he virtually lost by not making any gain Since then however he has improved 1 pmAt the examination a few minutes ago the Presidents pulse was 100 temperature 988 respiration respira-tion 20 All admit that he is doing well TO LOWELL Elberon I3There has been no material change in the Presidents condition during the last twenty four hours He was moved at his own request this afternoon from abed a-bed to an extension chair on which he remained half an hour He has been less inclined to drowsiness d using us-ing the day than usual The weather is now very favorable and the physicians phy-sicians think they discover signs of slight improvement in the symp toms They expect him to pass avery a-very comfortable night Elberon 6 pmAt the examination examina-tion of the President at 12 m ti day the temperature was 9SS pulse 100 respiration 20 At the evening dressing at o30 oclock the temperature tem-perature was 984 pulse 100 respiration respira-tion 20 The President was placed in a semiiecumbent position upon an invalids chair at 11 am and remained re-mained half an hour without fatigue or discomfort The wounds art making the usual favorable progress and his geneivl condition is reassuring reas-suring Signed D W BLISS P H HAMILTON Long Branch I3The weather today has been than ming The air perfectly pure and bracing just I such weather rs the Presidents attendants at-tendants have been looking for The patient today made good progress i pro-gress toward recovery Reports from the sick room throughout the entire day have been of the most reassuring re-assuring character and the fact that the surgeons and attendants are all in the best of spirits lends to confirm con-firm the idea that recuperation again fair commenced Not hl unfav I orable can be said today The bulletins bulle-tins tell the whole story A short time before noon there was quite a scene at Elberon Messengers from the cottage in which the President was quartered wet e dispatched for the surgeons and attendants Of course institutions were given to I I make haste as it was the Presidents desire they come immediately The order was faithfully compliel with and every one who witnessed the messengers running became excited and feared the President had become be-come suddenly worse The suspense sus-pense for a few moments was great The surgeons and Colonels Swain and Rockwell immediately answered an-swered the summons After a few minutes Dr Hamilton returned from the cottage with the I remark Gentlemen you need not be alarmed The President wished to be placed in his reclining chair and we have just moved himThe chair however is about as reclining as his bed and it cannot properly be called sitting up The chair was placed in a commanding view of the ocean and the President enjoyed the change very much He expressed his admiration of the beauties of the ocean while Mrs Garfield sat near him and Bliss remained in the next room After remaining in the chair about half an hour he asked to be put back to bed Bliss went into his room and asked him if he was weary No not at all he said but I do not think it will do to overdo the matter The attendants were summoned and the President replaced in bed The moving did not cause any acceleration of the pulse beyond a beat or so and the temperature remained the same as before he was disturbed The President greatly enjoys the scene and frequently refers to the great good the salt air is doing him Some comment was caused this morning by the publication of what purported be a protest by Colonels Swain and Rockwell against the concluding paragraph in Attorney General MaeVeaghs cable dispatch to Minister Lowell last night Asa As-a matter of fact it was written in the presence of Colonels Swain and Rockwell and they assented to the contents without hesitation and when AttorneyGeneral MacVeagh after having twice revised it read the dispatch a third time he remarked re-marked Gentlemen is that perfectly per-fectly correct and true To this inquiry all interested including Swam and Rockwell replied to the affirmative I Bliss says the glandular affection is practically well and no further ti 1 E trouble will arise from it The J 1 f wound is in splendid condition t The locality at which the ball entered I en-tered the body down to the part ttl where the incision was made is t nicely healed and granulation along J the track of the wound is p rogre5s I ing finely The I cleansing cathartic j entered todayabout the same depth as yesterday nine inches and struck I 1 solid substances The ball is no 1 doubt thoroughly encysted and no 1 t apprehension whatever is felt about 1 I it The doctor added in this connection t 7 con-nection Were it known exactly Iii t r where the ball lies and if it were lB r not half an inch from the surface f and could be readily removed we t i I should not think of cutting for it at U this time The lung affliction is 1 < I 1 the only prominent one and i in fact the only unfavorable symp i tom in the Presidents case f today and that has passed + I the crisis and is now mending a slowly but apparently sure The l f doctors detailed the circumstances IZ surrounding this complication and t t referred to the knoyledge of the t t attending surgeons that it had been gradually developing for from two to three weeks We knew it would reach a crisis and the crisis came ± j on Sunday On that day i there was no doubt the symp I s l toms being so pronounced that fears entertained that i they II t f would result in pulmonary abscess t t I ab-scess were warranted but fortunately r fortu-nately the trouble passed over satisfactorily j satis-factorily and the complication has t 1 i been getting better though slowly + i tf ever since The depression caused I by the crisis on Sunday obviated i gain by the patient that day but as I I t 4 I heretofore maintained the President I I t i t Presi-dent lost no ground He merely experienced i I t ex-perienced a standstill until the t I symptoms developed and passed by i i The febrile rise came quite late last s Might and was not so severe A as heretofore It had not entirely If I r worn off until after the morning t dressing Consequently H was the I I cause of the comparatively high r temperature noted in the morning I bulletin The temperature has been r gradually declining during the day and as shown by the last official 4 bulletin was on y about twotenths 1 t of a degree above the normal 1 With tbe exception of the first 1 forty hours after his arrival a nncl Sunday last the evidences are very conclusive to those constantly f con-stantly with the patient that he has it i made a daily gain ever since he 1f i reached Long Branch Dr Hamilton 1t
