Show A Liberal Ruling Washington 28Secretary Teller Tel-ler has rendered the following decision de-cision in a case recently reported to the General Land Office from Washington Wash-ington Territory in which one Baird was accused of trespassing and = L L cucimg tiimoer uuiawiuuy on pun lie lands The accused although a squatter is rightfully on the land it he intends to make his home on it and take ic under the settlement Idws when the land is surveyed and he is allowed to do so whether he is or is not a trespasser It does not depend on how many trees he cut but on the bona fide character charac-ter of the settlement If he takes the land in good faith he IB the owner thereof to all practical purposes pur-poses although the title may remain re-main in the government It occasionally occa-sionally suffers by loss of timber cut on pretended homestead and preemptory claims but settlers should not oe embarrassed in their efforts to secure the benefits of the liberal laws passed for the express purpose pt inducing people to go on tbe public lands and make themselves them-selves homes |
