Show CONTINUED VIGILANCE NECESSARY NECES-SARY r The full returns from the late election elec-tion in Virginia are interesting as containing an indication and hint to the Democrats who have just recovered re-covered control of their outragei State In 1876 the total vote for President was 235228 Tilden receiving re-ceiving 189070 and Hayes 95558 I In 18SD the vote dropped to 211615 J I the Democratic electors falling to 96449 while the Beadju ters and I Republicans had 115166 The next near 1881 the vote for governor was 211230 of which the Democratic Demo-cratic candidate had 99757 and the Readjuster 111473 Last year 1382 the vote for Congressmanatlarge fell to 198547 the Democrats polling but 94184 while the Bsadjusters had 99992 and the straight Republicans Repub-licans I 4342 This year the vote was the highest ever thrown in the State being 271836and the Democrats cast 144885 to 126951 by the Mahoneites It will thus be seen that while the Bourbons mustered all their I strength the Mahoneites fairly outdid out-did themselves throwing 31392 more votes than Hayes had 25959 more than they gave to their Con gressmanatlarge last year 15478 more than their governor received in 1881 and 11785 more than the Garfield electors scored in 1830 Despite their defeat the Mahoneites have steadily and rapily gained at every election since the party was organized In view of these facts the Democrats cannot afford to waste any strength or rest quietly in the belief that having regained their own it cannot again be wrested from them Lack of vigorous effort i at a single election would place them once more in the minority The Readjusters so far are a growing 1 grow-ing party only after they show j themselves to be in a decline can the Democrats feel secure |
