Show A 49ER AGAIN He Replies to UA Calf and Shows there is Great Loss in Cow Keeping Editors Herald In a reply to A49er by A Calf I am accused of giving figures that repudiate the result He says that I charge to som unknown account ac-count all the milk a family of five can use and to raise the calf and make the butter for five persons I will inform him that this unknown I un-known account can be found in Prize Essay puolished January I 7th wherein Uncle Zeo claims certain profits for his cow and the above are some of the items claimed I brought out the figures of the above to show that there must have been some mistake I placed at a rough estimate the keep of calf one year and all the milk and butter a family of five could use at I 365 but upon more mature reflection I am satisfied that my estimate was too low I will now give a more minute calculation To raise a calf the first three months as it should be raised ten quarts of milk per day at lOc per quart 890 milk to buy hay or other food for the calf the remaining nine months one quart per dav at IOc per quart 3750 milk for five persons in the family all they can use five quarts per day which will be one common glass for each person at a meal allowing al-lowing three meals a day at IOc per quart 18250 milk to make the butter needed for five persons allowing one ounce for each person at each meal and three meals per day would require fifteen ounces per day and the milk to produce this butter will be about fifteen quarts which at IOc per quart amounts to 150 but as the skim milk is worth something for hogs we will place the price at ic per quart which is rather aboye its real value and we have 15c worth of skim milk to take from the 150 and we still have 135 per day for butter and for the year 349275 and when the calf milk and butter are added together we have the sum of 79275 I am accused of allowing 100 above expenses This is a mistake Uncle Zoe claimed it but I said not to maintain main-tain the S100 claimed in hard cash and I did not bring it into account at all but as I find it will give better satisfaction for me to bring in this account so as to do full justice to what is claimed I will add the 100 to the 79275 and foot it up to 89275 Now as there is no particular fault found with the cost of feed for cow and heifer we wilt add that 18250 to the 89275 and we have the sum of 107525 We came very near forgetting the amount of interest on capital invested S3360 added to 106525 and we have the sum of 110885 Now the total amount of milk the cow will give for the year at 10 cents per quart comes to the sum of 8292 aud the increase value of calf and heifer S 20 which added together to-gether amounts to the sum of 8312 We will now take this sum of actual profit for the cow from what is claimed as profit by Uncle Zeo and we have a remainder of 76685 You must bear in mind that I do not reckon in this account the sum of 18250 for labor which is given in as a free will offering But 1 wonder how many there are of us that would like to make such an offering For the sake of the exact figures we would add this item of labor only that we are reminded re-minded that his cow was not at all remarkable as a milker or a butter cow Why I I am almost inclined to think him burlesquelng the subject but for fear of doing him an injustice I will try and treat the matter seriously But if Uncle Zeo had claimed that he built a theatre out of the proceeds of his cow I think I should not be blamed if I cannot wove by figures thathe did only wish I could bring the cow up to what is claimed for her and could get hold of a few such I would go into the cow business myself I can but regret that my criticisms have been considered so unjust and HSO uncallad for and that they I manifested more the spirit of caveling than a desire for the benefit bene-fit of the public but allow me to ask who it is that benefits the public he who gives figures or he who makes assertions that will not bear investigation and fortunate is that man who will think for himself and not be led to disappointment or financial loss by any one like Uncle Zeo and whatever is brought forward for-ward for the public good should not be aboye public criticism Yours very tryly A 49ER |
