Show A DestUute2 Pioneer New York1 Private letters received by the associated California pioneers here from different parties in San Antonia Texas state that a well known and once prominent gentleman who set tled in California in 1836 built the first solid structure ia San Francisco gave a Fourth of July banquet there the following follow-ing year and afterwards owned large properties in Sonora and elsewhere in California is living there in painfully reducpd circumstances J D Stevenson Steven-son a lawyer writes I have been struck with the old gentlemans heroic forbearance from complaint at his reverses re-verses and with his habitual cheerfulness cheerful-ness and his readiness at his advanced age of 73 to do anything to support himself I him-self if he could only find employment He said he had been turned away from his lodgings for want of means and I fitted up a bed for him in my office and have supported him with food but I urn unable to continue his support notwithstanding notwith-standing my willingness to do so He has no vices and is in good health The California pioneers in Now York are raising a small fund for his immediate relief |
